Nationwide From Jo'burg To London Gatwick

Mon Sep 22, 2003 6:50 am

Nationwide will be starting services between Johannesburg and London Gatwick on the 28th of November, using a leased 767-300. (Take a look @ www.flynationwide.co.za/press_releases.html for more info).

Does anyone know who they are leasing the aircraft from? I've never been on a 767, but it doesn't look like the best place to be for an 11-hour flight. I travel between SA and the UK fairly often and have grown quite fond of SAA's 747-400s (the dodgy 200s & 300s are a different story...glad these are being retired finally).

How well do you think Nationwide will do on this route? It will be the only non-stop service from Gatwick to JNB, but will people really want to try a "new" airline over the establishment: SA / BA / VS?

Does a 767 even have the range to make this flight?

Good question given they plan to fly an all economy layout(albeit economy plus will be included).

The B767 definately has the range for this service, since Sobelair flew this route from Brussels until recently. I wonder if they would consider also starting a Durban-Gatwick route, that seems like an ideal leisure route during the cold European winter. By the way, whatever happened to African Star Airlines?

Sure, its within the range of a 767-300....AC operated 763's on YYZ-TLV which is nearly 200 miles longer than JNB-LGW...

JNB-LGW = 5595mi.... which a 763ER is fundamentally capable of covering.

The range is not a problem but performance out of JNB is very much restricted by the altitude of the airport. On the VS A340's we lose 15-20T of payload compared to the southbound flight, depending on the temp etc.

It'll be nice to see a new operator at LGW though. Incidentally, I wonder if they'll still have the 'In co-operation with Virgin' stickers on the a/c?!
