Airports Without Jetways

Mon Sep 22, 2003 8:40 am

Just wodering...what major airports (or for that matter, minor airports with scheduled service) are lacking jetbridges. (Or have a few, but no where near enough.) A few that come to mind are LIM, ANU, FCO (I know they have jetways there, but I've flown in 3 times and never used one...), BDA, LGB, and Kai Tak was certainly one. What others are there?

Not sure of the letter-code, but I flew into Kona, hawaii a couple years ago and all of the a/c there used airstairs. I didnt see any jetbridges anywhere. Also, EVV does not have any...but they only are served by connectors, with their largest a/c being a CRJ or E145!

Salzburg,Alghero,Treviso,Charlerois,Ciampino, etc. come to mind (just based on my patchy knowledge of the Ryanair route network  Big grin )

Apart from STN,PIK and DUB, which Ryanair destinations actually have jetbridges installed at the airports at all?

My brother flew NW to EGE(EAgle/Telluride,Colorodo) back in march and said it had no jetways. Also the UAL terminal @ SJC is another one I can think of.

PIE (St. Petersburg/Clearwater Int'l) does not have jetways... I think they are in the master plan, but they have not been built yet since they would require a second story to be added to the current one story facility.

Visalia (KVIS) does not have a jetbridge. In fact, the only scheduled service into VIS is United Express/Skywest props. Visalia is about 30 miles south of Fresno. The only cities served out of VIS are Los Angeles, Sacramento, and Fresno. United Express operates the LAX and FAT flights, while Bakersfield Aircharter will run the Sacramento service.

One of the busiest airports in South America, if not the busiest: CGH. Flights leaving and arriving almost every minute between 6:00 and midnight. Numerous shuttles, and a beautiful masterplan with jetways, but none in yet.

Well, PSE doesn't have any jetways and neither does BQN. However, PSE's supposed to be getting two jetways installed sometime in the future and BQN's getting a domestic terminal built which may get jetways as well.

Kona, Hawaii's code is KOA. Yes it's true not an Jetway in sight. It's fun to watch people get on and get off the JL 747 that arrives from NRT. Has anyone made the climb up the stairs to a 747? I did it the first time I flew a UA 747 from HNL in 1975. It's a hike. A DC-10 is just as bad. JL also uses a DC-10 for KOA.

Up until the mid-90s, HNL's inter-island service had no Jetways. At least the stairs for a DC-9 or 737 isn't as bad as a 747!

Isn't it amazing how we take something so simple as a Jetway for granted?

up unitl about a year and a half ago CYLW did not have a jetway....it's mainly used for Horizon's Dash-8's and the once daily Air Canada A319, while Westjet loads both 200's and 700's from roll up stairs

There seems to be a bit of confusion over EGE. Yes, there are no jetways even though they recently built a new terminal. American is easily the largest airline at EGE, but they do not fly there from DEN. Only United does, and they use BAE146s for it. All other flights into EGE from American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, and starting this year US Airways are on 757s. EGE serves Eagle/Vail and is several hours from Telluride.

Speaking of airports without jetwalks, one thing that really surprised me when Kai Tak airport in HKG operated was the fact they never adopted using mobile lounges like what you see at IAD for HKG's remote stands.

Using mobile lounges would have been useful, especially with Hong Kong's rainy weather during the summer months.

EGFF (CWL) has about 4-5 jetways and around 15+ parking areas but the jetways and most of the close parking areas always seem to be full when I have landed there. LETS HOPE THEY GET A NEW TERMINAL AT CWL!  Laugh out loud

CDG does not have nearly enough jetways! Especially for North American morning arrivals. It is shameful for such an nice airport and city that they cannot get this figured out. Using a bus can add 45 minutes to a long trip and makes connections highly unfriendly.

BHX Forever how could you forget CWL (CARDIFF|)  Pissed It is more of an international airport than Leeds, Humberside, Liverpool and Aberdeen will ever be!

Looks like a few Jetways to me at CWL!

Many of the smaller CA airports do not have jetways. MOD, SCK, RED, FAT didnt until the new terminal was completed, BFL, Visalia, MRY, LGB, Ventura/Oxnard, Eureka/Arcata, Crescent City, and I am sure there are more, I just cannot think of them now. On the other hand, the airports with jetways have an ample amount of them, (LAX, SFO, SAN, OAK) Although I did once deplane a Ryan Intl DC-10 in OAK via airstairs!

In the South Pacific, jetways are far and few between. I know for a fact, that many of the islands in CO´s Island Hopper route do not have jetways. GUM does, and I haven´t been to SPN in a long time, and I don`t really remember. Many of the Hawaiian Islands do not have jetways, with the exception of HNL. I do not think Okinawa has jetways either. CUN does not have jetways for its domestic arrivals, but they do for the foreign arrivals.

STT & STX don't have jetways....I remember standing on the stairs & looking into the engine during the layover in STT (DL 757) & hiking down stairs at STX.
