I Want To Fly On A 747!

Mon Sep 22, 2003 10:53 am

I know this is becoming increasingly difficult for us in the U.S. to get on a 747 flight, but this is always something I've wanted to do. Can someone suggest some inexpensive ways that I could realize this goal (other than getting a job with an airline). Are there any little known U.S. domestic runs serviced by 747s? For example, I'm pretty sure South African used to run a FLL - ATL run with a 747, but I'm not sure whether or not this was open to domestic pax. Preferably, I'd like to ride on a 747-400, but any model will do. Would appreciate the replies.

I'm not sure what United's schedule is as the moment, but they do or have 744's on DEN-LAX, DEN-SFO, DEN-ORD, IAD-LAX, IAD-SFO. I think that's about the only chance you'll have to fly a 747 in the US.

Talk to United or Northwest. They're the only airlines in the U.S. that operate the 747 today. Tell them you want to fly on a 747 and ask them where you can catch one.

Good luck.

Don't think NW operates any 747's domestically. United will be your best bet.

Yea, I just looked at NW's timetable but couldn't find any U.S. domestic 747 service. Will look at United.

United used to....I can't find any right now though...seems they've all gone 777? I guess the 744's are all going to Asia now.

Might want to get a 'cheap' fare from JFK-LHR on BA to get on a 744...just an idea.

It looks like the only U.S. domestic 747 ops are flights 857 (ORD-SFO) and 152 (SFO-ORD).

JHooper,

Begining with the November schedules, there is a UAL 744 flying Chicago to Washington, D.C. roundtrip

I'll have to check out that ORD-IAD flight. Anyway, I was surprised to see a RT from JFK-LHR on BA priced at $321.82

Also look at the Air India services JFK-LHR, ORD-LHR, EWR-CDG or even ORD-FRA starting in December. These have traditionally priced out very cheap and you are assured of a B747-400.

I wish I had taken advantage of the opportunity when I was eligible to purchase ID-90 tickets. I actually had bought one on UA from LAX to ORD for around $100, but then I ended up refunding it because I was in college and $100 was a fortune for me and I was broke. Ahhhh! Oh well...

Jhooper,
It's great to fly on a 747-400. I have got every month the opportunity to do it on long haul flights and I hope you will soon have your dream realized.

United also has 744s flying between ORD and LAX and ORD and SFO. One, if not two a day I think. You can get some pretty cheap fares on those flights if you keep an eye out. Right now though the fares to the west coast on United are about $400....which is crazy high and unusual.....so they'll be coming down soon.....

I flew on a VS 747 back in 1999 and it was my favourite flight. I just loved being on the massive aircraft, and the takeoff was brilliant.

You're only 747 chances within North America are on United and maybe Royal Air Maroc JFK-YUL (if the flight is not being operated by a 763).

Qantas and SAA domestic USA sectors are definate no-nos.

Failing that, your next bet would be a cheap USA-Europe flight in October/early November/early December where the airlines can't give the seats away (word of caution- London becomes expensive when all those taxes are added in).

You can get a $158.00 R/T fare on that UA ORD-IAD 744.

Purchase the R/T and fly 1-way, trash the return ticket.

Will they charge my credit card for the difference in fare if I do that, or should I pay by cash?

The best way to fly on a 747 is as stated above, yvr-jfk, it is a daily flight and 99.9% of the time it is a 747! It may even cost less as the main leg of the flight is to Asia.

I would go with a flight to Europe. Better service, better airline, and a better experience, especially when the fares are cheap. Or, for some fun, if you can find the right price, try Seattle to Tokyo Narita in a Northwest 747-200. I've been on that one a few times, even though it's Northwest, it's still a classic 742! Air Canada from Vancouver to Honolulu was a 744 when I took it, and I have found that route to be low cost at times. Not all the time, but at times. Like when all of the flights out of Seattle to Honolulu were around $2000 last Christmas, I found one on Air Canada for only $650 US dollars roundtrip out of Vancouver.

BA has a $99 each way JFK-LHR (looked last night). You have to book by the 25th I think.

Finally found the 747...MCO-ORD-IAD-MCO was only $2XX for a one day trip....not too bad.

Will see what I can find. I looked on Travelocity but couldn't find a flight which arrived in LHR and departed the same day. I wasn't planning on staying overnight.

If you really want to appreciate the size of the 744's wing, or for any wing for that matter, sit at a window seat towards the back. You'll get the full profile of the wing, whereas if you sat right above the wing, it looks somewhat shorter.

I have flown on 2 747's. One BA 747-200 on the SFO-LHR run, and a AF 747-400 on the MIAMI-PARIS route. The 747 is an amazing aircraft and I hope you find a suitable fare.

I would suggest taking the longest flight you can afford -- make it worth your while! Back in 1992 I flew nonstop from JFK to TLV and back on EL AL -- 10 hours eastbound and 12 hours on the return leg. Two full meals and two full-length movies in that time, and a window seat at that!  Smile I would at least go for the JFK or EWR to LHR route.

In late 2000, I bought tickets on United to go from Spokane (GEG) to Birmingham (BHM) via Chicago. It was going to be a typical boring flight in a pair of aging 737's. When we arrived at the ticket counter, they informed us that they had overbooked the flight, and were asking for volunteers to take the next flight to ORD. Unfortunately, that later flight would have put us in ORD too late to make our BHM flight, so we looked for other options. There was another United 737 about to board from GEG to SFO, so we asked if we could find a ride from SFO to ORD. After a bit of typing, the gate agent said she had two flights that would get us to ORD on time to make our connection - so I asked the question that any other spotter would ask - "What aircraft types???" The first was a 757. Been there, done that. The next? 747-400. OH HALE yeah, put us on that one!

Once in SFO, we raced to our gate to find a beautiful brand-new 747-400 waiting for us. It was amazing. My first time on the Jumbo. My family and I had dressed nicely, and after a wee bit of flirting with the gate agent, she bumped us to Business Class, since we had gone "so far out of our way". Incredible. The Captain told me that the aircraft was actually only several weeks old, and that we may have a long trip ahead of us. Right after we pushed, we had to hold next to 28R (I think) for about 90 minutes waiting for an ATC hold in ORD due to weather.

Riding in Biz class was awesome. That wing really does flex a lot on takeoff! Our flight was in the afternoon, with an evening arrival in REAL nasty weather in ORD just before dark. The approach was a bit rough, but the landing was very good, and the Captain stood on the brakes to stop us about halfway down the runway (or so it seemed). They did a fabulous job.

My personal experiences with United have been very good - I've always enjoyed their service. I recently flew ORD - LHR on one of their 777-200's, and it was very cool as well. I'd highly reccommend them.

Hope this helps!

What would really be cool is a UNITED 747 to ORD out of DEN then 777 BACK.
That would be a blast, once you have flown the 777 you dont want to go back to the 747, just my opinion, you get spoiled.
