Any More First Class On CRJ's?

Thu Sep 25, 2003 6:46 am

Mesa (Freedom Air) now have First Class seating on their Rj's (CRJ-700's & CRJ-900's) with 6 seats, will we see airlines like ASA, Comair, AE, CoEx, etc...follow the trend? I know that seat cost per mile is very important with the RJ's so I would imagine the 70-seaters RJ's and higher would be the only candidates. However I was wondering about the 40-seat RJ's that both ASA & Comair have could be converted to allow for some FC. These jets are exactly the same as their 50-seat brothers with the first two rows and last two seats on the left side removed, and unusable closets that replaced them. However I understand that if additional seats were installed then Bom. would charge the respective airline for the difference in cost from the 40-50. Any opinions if we'll see any more regionals with FC?

Hey, Horizon's CRJ's (I don't know about the Frontier ones) have 70 first class seats. At least they must be. Leather and free beer every flight, every day. And the best part is that they charge a coach price.

Doubt you will see that on a DL flight. Bom. had so many engine problems with the 700, they gave both ASA and Comair 40 seaters at a discount until they could figure out the problem. Outside of DFW, I don't think the 700 is used on long enough flights to require first class (given that is most cases, it is just more capacity than a 50 seater), so I doubt they will retofit a 700 to fly DFW-SNA or OAK. Especially Comair - I think their 700s are used more for capacity than range.
