Best Looking Or Tribute 727

Thu Sep 25, 2003 1:12 pm

Ok! The 727 was the super workhorse in which
pilots would say"Just clean the windshield".
So in tribute to a great plane which was the
backbone of many carriers in 1960's/70's and
80's, your thoughts and praise of the three
holer. My choice: PSA, Air Jamaica and
of course, old Braniff.
Have fun!

It was a great plane, and I think it helped many airlines develop their domestic routes and maintain profitability. I dont think there will be another plane that will hold the mystique and attraction of the 727! I loved seeing it around and miss it!

I've said it on this board probably a dozen times, but for my money, the 727 is the most beautiful, enduring example of 20th century industrial design. The only other plane to come close in my book is Concorde -- but for such a practical, widely used plane to be as stunning as the 727 is is quite an achievement.

My preferred livery for the 727 is the AA livery; timeless, enduring and striking.

Can you believe the plane in that photograph is 25 years old, and is wearing a livery even older than that? I love these planes. It pains me that they're nearly gone around here.

To be very honest, I really like the old 727s in the FedEx livery. They just look really good in it.

What a site. I wish I had my camara.

I'm kinda partial to the striking NATIONAL Sun King livery, since my very first commercial flight was aboard a B727-235. I also loved the old AA Astrojet lightning bolt scheme and the Braniff flying colors scheme. The UA friendship (stars&bars) scheme was very nice, as well.

I would like to reinforce/repeat John's answer! My first commercial flight was in a NA 727 also.... NA DC10's were absolutely the best looking, too....

Yes, indeed one of the most beautiful planes. But unfortunately they have been dirt-catapults and too noisy. So they have to disappear from our skies.

How could I forget the 727 soot trail??? I'll always remember watching DL &UA's 72's come into ROC with a soot-trial behind them  Smile
I even went to the airport the last day of UA 727's (10-30-2001). Unfortunately,I missed the last day of DL 72's .
Too bad the freighters come in at night ,I can't get a picture, but I enjoy seeing DHL 490 come in on Friday nights from DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL around 11pm.

I'll probably start a row with our more eco-minded friends, but I LOVE the sound of jets flying overhead!. I've lived close to airports much of my life, and always run to the nearest window whenever I hear something overhead...

@Gspspot - me too. I don't care about noise from an aircraft.
But it's a eco-shame if this aircraft is still in use.

Thanks for a great Southwest 727 photo.
I have a couple of Southwest 727's myself,
but it was badly overcast at LAX, and the photo's
didn't come out well. By the way, some people still
denied that Southwest even used 727's.

I still love the classic look of the "twenty seven".
I flew on about 80 727 flights with Air Canada during its life with the airline and I can't think of anything bad about them. I only have good memories of those beautiful planes.
Here is a link to one of my favorite AC 727 pictures.

The 727: A beautiful bird in any colors!

But the only airline I ever flew them with was CO, and only their -200's. Flew em quite a bit though. My most memorable 727 flight was when my dad was working the flight as a first officer. The flight was from Houston to Orlando, and I sat in the very last row. WOW was it loud! Three JT8D's within a few yards of me...

Attesting to the true versatility of the 727 is the fact that, for the better part of a decade, it was the only narrowbody type in the fleets of two U.S. major airlines, Continental and Northwest. The three-holer, especially the -200 Advanced version introduced in 1972, performed efficiently for these and many other airlines on routes from 200 to 2,000 miles. Another tribute to the design of the 727 is that for some airlines, it was chosen to replace older versions of the same type and was the first airliner ever to be represented by more than 100 aircraft in the fleet of any airline.

By today's standards it seems difficult to believe that "Whisperjet" (as EA referred to their first 727s and DC-9s) was once a fitting name for the 727 in that it was significantly quieter than the first generation jets it replaced on short- and medium-haul routes.

Hail to the three holer - hail to the dragster of the sky.

I think the B727 looks best with a dominent white fuselage, like we used to see in Australia with Ansett and Australian Airlines (or TAA). another of my favourites would be Pan Am (old colours).

I think that Braniff, PSA and the new DL livery all looked great on the 727. Even the original UA Friendships looked good on the 727-200/727-100.
