New Swiss Projects

Thu Sep 25, 2003 9:11 pm

After a few years of depression the Swiss aviation market seems to move quite a bit...

Following new airlines are on the way, some are in an early, some are in a final stage of planning.

Here we go:

Helvetic Airlines (former Odette Airways): plans to operate up to 10 Fokker 100s on low fare flights from Zurich. First destinations: Vienna, Valencia and Alicante. www.helvetic.com

Baboo Airways: Regional airline based in Geneva. First flights begin in late October between Geneva and Lugano operated by Cirrus Airlines Dash-8. Destinations such as Marseille, Florence, Venice, Bordeaux, St.Tropez, Toulouse and Olbia are planned. www.flybaboo.com

TicinoJet: TicinoJet plans to serve important European business centers from Lugano. www.ticinojet.com

Darwin Airlines: Plans to operate on the Lugano-Geneva route.

HELLO: New airline founded by Crossair founder Moritz Suter. Planned flights from Lugano to Geneva with Saab 2000 but cancelled this plans due to competition and other problems (Saab2000 are no longer tolerated in LUG). However, it is rumoured that this plan to operate on LUG-GVA was just an alibi. According to several sources, Moritz Suter worked on a different project since he was sent off by the SWISS management. His plans are to operate 12+ Embraer-170s on low cost flights ex Basel.

Basilea Airlines: Plans to operate on Basel-Europe routes. www.basilea-airlines.ch

ES Air Cargo: New cargo airline in Basel. Will take off in autumn with flights to west Africa, mainly Ghana with a DC-8. A second DC-8 will be based in BSL next year for flights to Asia.

Did I forget something?

MD-83 HB-INV of Odette Airways will remain in its colour scheme even though Helvetic Airways will take-off late October! I bet you didn't know...  Wink/being sarcastic

No I didn't. This is the plane operating on ethnic flights from ZRH to some Balkan countries, right?

I forgot to mention Air Avance, an airline that wants to operate Jetstreams from St.Gallen-Altenrhein to Brussels, Dusseldorf, Graz, Milan, Nuremberg, Pula and Split. It is managed by Peter Binz, an ex-Swissair MD-11 pilot.

RJ100,

Helvetic: I am not overly confident about them, fares on most routes are higher than Swiss. Perhaps an easyJet/Ryanair variable fare policy would be a better idea.

Baboo Airways: They seem to have a fair chance, decent management and have apparently raised most funds required. That said, I still wouldn't bet money on them taking off.

TicinoJet: Not holding my breath. Should they actually get somewhere, I would not expect them to last.

Darwin Airlines: The project is apparently dead.

Basilea Airlines: The website looks like a joke.

ES Air Cargo: DC-8s back flying in Switzerland? That would be surprising.

Air Avance: Forget them, a bloody joke to put it kindly. See this topic from some weeks back:

Copaair737,

Air Switzerland are long dead. CEO (M. Ritter) was recently caught with forged notes from some Middle Eastern country.

Hello Jeremiah

I agree with you. Regarding the ES Air Cargo company I can tell you that it is well planned and that they started to plan a long time ago but did not tell the public.

BTW, Cargologic (a former part of SAirGroup?) will be responsible for the cargo trucking to/from BSL.

The flights from Ghana are now scheduled to fly 5 times a week (Monday-Saturday) and will arrive in BSL in the early morning hours. They are serious about operating the DC-8-72F. While they transport all different things from BSL to Ghana they will fill the planes with fresh fruit and vegetables on the way back.

Regards,
Thomas

Just a small update:

ES Air Cargo: Their first flight is now definitely on Monday 27th of October with a chartered DC-8-62 which operates all flights in the first month. They will receive their first own aircraft (DC-8-72F) in December.

Basilea Airlines: They updated their website. Not much better than before but it shows that they are "alive". A press conference is planned in November where they will present their plans.

Baboo Airways: Dash-8 pilots need additional training to be allowed to fly into LUG. Not sure if they will start flights on time...
