CWL Why Is It So Bad!

Fri Sep 26, 2003 1:03 am

I have tried to be positive about my local airport, its efficient, its attracted new airlines, new routes, new terminal design etc but its rubbish!

I would love to see a CO 757 there!

Why can't CWL's management see that it has potential but they are using it in the wrong areas!

Any thoughts, ideas?

EGFFbmi,

in all due respect you don't think you've been posting a bit too many things on Cardiff lately? I can see that your deeply attached to your airport, but think a bit before creating topics that are very similar to each other. I'm just trying to give you a bit of advice and don't want to be mean here but I'm sure after a while people are going to get sick of daily CWL posts on here. Just some advice...

Cardiff will probably never be a huge airport due to the fact that you aren't that far away from London, where the yields and demand are certainly way higher.

Cheers mate,
Tim

Sorry, have to say I have noticed the same thing too, I love my local NCL, but accept that it is a regional airport and only long hauls are usually charter movements. I think people will be getting a little tired of CWL posts and you may be better asking more general questions, as I am sure you would like to learn more about aviation outside you local airport.

Well BA Capt Thompson and his crew enjoyed their stay at CWL last week, even though it was unscheduled while flying Concorde G-BOAG.
Not for the facilities or anything about the services there, but when they combined an air-test with the ferry back to LHR, (via the Bay Of Biscay), the proximity of CWL to the Severn Estuary and lack of noise abatement rules allowed a 21 deg attitude, reaching 28FL and Mach 1 in four minutes, Mach 2 48FL eight minutes after that!

Actually EGFFbmi, your post yesterday sparked my interest in visiting Cardiff. I've always wanted to visit Wales and now you've got me thinking. CWL have a lovely web-site, and I'd like to try some of the low cost carriers there, like FR and WW.

I've enjoyed your post(s), and thanks.

Ok, I am going to put in a good word for Cardiff, as it is my hometown but I am exiled in London.

The facilities there are pretty poor, especially when compared to the new terminal at BRS. But there is some variety for spotters at CWL, especially when there are rugby charters for international matches during the winter. The location is also very good, near to the coast. Soon a rail link will re-open between the airport and the city.

Other contributors to this thread are correct- Cardiff will never be an international hub, but on the positive side, BMI Baby chose CWL, and Air Wales has expanded services in recent months. I fly with them to CWL from LCY regularly, and that route seems to be quite popular. CWL also has regular charters to the US and Canada.

But the fact that BA pulled out was a real blow.

I think that the airport's old slogan, "Large enough to cope, small enough to care" pretty much sums it up.

Respect, EGFFbmi!

TransGlobal2 I'm glad someone likes my posts! LOL! If you do travel from CWL I suggest all the routes with WW LOL except for Jeresy always delays there! With FR well there's 1 Dublin LOL! I do suggest you try CWL - LCY on an Air Wales - ATR-42 amazing crew, plane etc  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

BRS superior? umm I don't quite think so! BRS Has EasyJet, CWL has BMIbaby! BRS has FlyBE, CWL has Air Wales! BRS + CWL have the same sort of airlines, low cost, charter and UK regional! BUT The one difference is CWL has flights to USA + Canada Big grin unlike BRS  Smile

Also BRS = a very small runway, what is the biggest they can land there 757?
CWL can handle A/C as big as the 747 easily + CONCORDE  Big thumbs up

I hope CO start services from CWL  Laugh out loud

Any thoughts?

BRS has nearly 3 times the amount of passengers every year  Big grin.

Could be over 5 million this year, if the figures are right, muahaha Big grin

Bristol 5 million, can't see it! More like 4.5 million! I must give it to BRS brilliant terminal but not just as adaptable as EGFF's terminal!

EGFF should handle 3.5 million this year which is more than double compared to last year which was only 1.25 million!

Be honest who do you think CO will choose, CWL or BRS?

I think CWL due to it's better runway, air bridges, SLIGHTLY better road facilities + better weather conditions!

Any thoughts ideas?

By the way, do you think Lufthansa, Iberia and Alitalia will fly to BRS or CWL in the future?

CWL - nearest airport for me but while I have not flown from it my father has. It is a lovely little facility but has suffered from proximity to Bristol, which offers a larger catchment area and has thus attracted more flights, especially to Europe. The cessation of BA's flights to CWL with the moniker that pax should head to BRS testifies to this. Nonetheless bmibaby's services have done well and the charters are always popular.

Access to the facility is the weak point as it is several miles outside of Cardiff and accessible by A-roads which are somewhat long and winding. The rail link with Cardiff Central (via Barry) is not expected until 2005 due to the need for signalling upgrades along the line. So, the remoteness that enables it to operate 24 hours daily and not have noise abatement procedures also is a hindrance. That said, from what I have heard from many, Lulsgate is no better in that regard.

All the same, CWL is a great airport and I hope to fly from it soon.

Yo, I didn't even know what or where CWL was until you posted these messages. Anyone that thinks you are overposting CWL, well, they don't have to read the message. May you get Q400's early and often. Rock on my man! And that's a good thing.  Big thumbs up

CWL should pass the 2 million pax a year mark this year, so I dont know where you get the 3.5million pax a year figure. As for BRS, they should pass the 4 million, not 5 million.
Neither CWL or BRS can handle a 747 or Concorde fully loaded.
BTW, BRS has flights to the Gambia  Laugh out loud

"Be honest who do you think CO will choose, CWL or BRS?"
Neither  Big grin

I don't think they will either,

I'm not that bothered really, and I don't particularly like BRS either, I've had some good memories from there but its not a great airport by any means, and if you live where I do its a bitch to get too, the runway is too small and its on a hill with lots of mist and fog through the winter months.

Yes, I've heard about 2.2-2.4m for CWL and 4.5-4.8m for BRS, but we've had up to 20,000 passengers a day at peak times.

Heard it might not be an AMM 763 doing the Banjul charters for you at BRS this year Dan, but maybe Crosswind knows more?

Last winter's GLA-BRS-BJL flights were operated by an air2000 757 not a 767!

Due to the low loads experienced, this winter the tour operator involved, The Gambia Experience, have contracted Astraeus to operate the GLA-BRS-BJL using a 737-700. Unfortunately none of Astraeus' aircraft have any IFE, so it will be a looong flight!

Yeah, I think there was one 767 last year doing the BJL flights, but that was it. Also there is a charter sometime in January with BY to FLL with a 763, I will not miss it! Big grin

The worst thing about being at CWL from a passenger perspective has to be the poor facilities- the long climb up a flight of stairs (no escalator) from check in to the departure lounge; the lack of views onto the runway once you have cleared Security; dodging holidaymakers determined to get as tanked up as they possibly can before boarding their charter flight. Not a great experience...

The viewing terrace has been "temporarily closed" ever since I can remember too.

Graham

Are you thinking of the infamous Iberia A300 incident circa 1984 (EC-DNR I believe it was) which ended up going off the runway? (Operated an Aviaco charter...I don't recollect too many IB aircraft at MAN doing AO services!)

EGGD,
I can assure you every single Bristol-Banjul flight last winter was operated by a 757, no 767 aircraft were used.

David, nah, Im sure a MON A300 once operated a one-off charter into EGGD in the last 2 or 3 years.
Just looked through the a.net photo database and found it was operating a Lourdes charter, unfortunatly its a plug for one of Dan's pics  Sad
