Why Does BA Only Flies 3x To MEX?

Sat Sep 27, 2003 1:43 am

In multiple discussions going on in this forum, We have discussed the way in which European carriers beat Mexican airlines.

One of the great mystery's of this discussions has always been. Why the #$@^! does BA only flies 3x a week to MEX

Does anybody know a special reason for this, I mean.. LH Has 10x week, IB 10x, AF 7x, KLM 7x, but BA only 3x!!!

In the past avioncitos meeting(MEX) it was said that there is a law between England and MEX that won't let BA have more frequencies to MEX if a Mexican airline doesn't fly to England..... Which will never happen I guess...

Anybody can help to solve out this mystery???

I find that odd considering the only European city served by a Mexican airline is Paris.

Sorry, no can do! But it's true that it has to do with agreements between countries! Maybe the UK-Mexico bilateral is so special (and by special I mean so stupid or even better so finiky) that Mexico did not allow more flights from airlines from the UK.

??????

Madrid isn't a European City?

I'd forgotten MAD but the point I was trying to make still stands-both LH and KL fly in daily or more and don't have a Mexican airline flying in to FRA/AMS so it might be due to BA just using its slots at LHR for other routes.

Maybe it is supply and demand? Or by offering 3 flights a week they can effectively fill them at a higher cost then offering 7 to 10 flights a week and have to discount to fill the seats.....

Mexico don't have a flag carrier! AeroMexico and Mexicana can't compete with European and American carriers.... a shame but it's true.... LHR, AM), Netherlands">AMS, FRA, FCO, MXP, ZRH, MUC, same as more B767-300 or -400s, 777s, 747s, MD11s, that's to much for AM and MX.... why.... dunno.... stupid leaders in CINTRA (The onwer of AM, MX, QA and AeroLitoral)...... Europe destinations flown with a Mexican carrier only in our dreams.... but... maybe we might see opening the routes by a Mexican in 2050 with Aviacsa or Azteca!!!.... Let's wait!!

Frustrating for me and I think I'm not the only one.....

I flew in BA first class LHR- MEX- LHR in January, and WT, WTP and Club were packed. First was about 75% full- there seems to be a considerable demand on that route.

As for a future transatlantic carrier from Mexico, my money is on Aerocaribe!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

BA also briefly flew to CUN with a 777- answer to why BA only flies 3x to MEX could simply be after crunching the numbers BA feels that number of flights satisfies demand.

Latin America is not exactly a 'strong' area for BA....money is made on the usual routes (those where you would anticipate strong demand to & from London).

I speculate it may just be that there isn't enough traffic between the UK & Mexico to warrant a daily service...at the moment the airline is reviewing its route network and making changes (mostly dropping or reducing services) in order to save money - remember, BA is an airline in trouble...

Recent examples include scrapping the flights to Chile (though this is because of LA's OW membership), reducing services to Argentina to 3 flights weekly (and now via GRU with a 777 instead of a nonstop 744), and reductions & equipment changes on flights to Colombia & Venezuela.

Perhaps 3x week to MEX is realistic - given BA's behaviour in other parts of the region, if MEX was served more frequently, they might have also reduced its frequencies.

Strange, Mexico is regarded as a popular destination in Britain...I think a lot of people are using LH & AF (like I do, to fly to Argentina) simply because those airlines offer much cheaper fares. BA are very expensive on such routes.

But the Uk is about the 3rd largest investor in Mexico so the business class component should be there. But then, with so many daily seats to Mexico, maybe BA just doesn't want to get into a discounting war?

Love2Fly and Donder10 have it exactly. Why offer more flights and have to discount seats when you can operate 3xweekly and sell seats at the highest fare possible. The BA MEX route is usually full and passengers have paid high fares to travel with BA. They obviously make money and plan to keep it that way. Do the other European carriers fly onfrom MEX or just offer the non stop service like BA. Still it would be nice to see a mexican carrier at LHR???? Who would be first!

It would make sense to fly only 3 days a week with high fares, but here in MEX, the lowest fares regular offered to Europe are from BA, maybe a lot of Brits connect via USA, but I don´t see the logic of only 3 flights a week, with cheap coach fares.

If they are already offering cheap coach fares on 3 flights a week, then why add more? If they could fill 3 flights easily and at a decent rate then I am sure they would consider more. It also might have to do with the additional airport charges that the MEX airport charges? Landing fees, fuel all that good stuff.

British AIrways could always reinstate a short-lived yet popular (at least here anyway) flight from 1982...LGW-MSY-MEX 3x weekly. Of course, no more L15's in the fleet, so I guess they'd have to throw in a 763.

God it's great to dream!

MSYTRISTAR.....it would be even better as LHR-MSY-MEX. They could add that as the other 4 days that MEX is not served nonstop. If they did it on the new 3 class 777s, maybe they could make money!!! Nice for the crew and maybe a good money earner for BA. Would MSY be good sales for BA?? Does anybody know?

Definitively money is note the reason, BA always has the cheapest fares from/to MEX and Europe. They charge only $499USD but still only fly three times a week.

LH has more expensive tickets and sells 10 flights a week.
I do believe there is a law between countries that wont let BA have more frequencies, but I'm not sure.

Rojo? Do you have something about that law?? AM777??

Given BA's links with IB via OneWorld, and IB's relative strength in the Latin American market from Europe, do BA code share with IB on many of IB's Latin America routes? Could this also explain why there are fewer direct LHR-MEX flights?

I noticed an interesting example of codesharing on the Piccadilly trains on the London Underground recently - the advert telling pax where to check in for each LHR terminal. T4 included all BA intercontinental except Miami and Tripoli....and it also included Iberia (Bangkok only).

Even before the BA/IB link, there was very little BA presence in Mexico, or much of Latin America for that matter.

Don't forget, there are much larger Spanish, Portuguese, German & Italian communities in Latin America than British.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I'm not specially sure that the German comunity is stronger than a British comunity in MEX....
