What's The Best Latin American Airport?

Tue Sep 30, 2003 12:46 am

I dont know, but many people have different opinions about this.

I dont have a favorite, but I say Maiquetia in Caracas Venezuela is decent.

And San Juan Luis Munoz marin, but consider SJU a American Airport.

Whats the best Latin American Airport?

MEX?
PTY?
BOG?
SAL?
SDQ?
HAV?
GRU?
GIG?
CCS?
SCL?
EZE?

There are so much...

Never been there. But I'm under the impression that SCL might be among the best planned and functional in the region.

GUA has a really cool airport, although I wouldnt say the best. MEX has a nice one too. Terminal B there cant be beat. PTY, however, could have a case for the best, but where do the domestic arrivals land??

Time in GUA is stuck in 1963. An apparently no repairs, or bathroom cleaning for that matter, have happened since then.

...
10. MTY

***SAL***San Salvador's Comalapa International is small and decent but is located in a very nice area near the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by lakes, cities, and volcanic mountains with a nice flat runway. The scenery from the air is beautiful.

As much as I like the approach at GUA it certainly does not make the airport nice. La Aurora Airport in Guatemala its not much more than a nice bus station IMHO. What I really like about it is that it has some nice traffic with some heavies departing every now and then.

CCS (Caracas, Maiquetia) is a nice airport though. Lots of traffic and a cool appoach. Beautiful ladies. Gorgeous.

HAV (Havana). Very functional International terminal with jetways and pretty much everything you could expect from the airports you travel to. Just don't step in Terminal 2 (which is also used as international) or domestic, 'cause the magic is over.

SDQ (Santo Domingo). For some strange reason I felt I was at DTW airport. It is big but gives you the feeling that after construction it has not received a lot of maintenance. The areas are nice, but it got stuck in the late 80's. At Dominicana de Aviacion ramp you can see a nice bunch of partially scrapped 727's, 707 and some propliners.

MEX (Mexico City). I would rate it with a B+ It did not get the A grade because it is very very congested with little or no space to grow at all. Nevertheless the gates and overall public areas are in great condition and look great. It has some of the best places to spot.

CUN (Cancun). I like it and not because it's my home airport (they have invested several million USD). Very friendly services (except in Terminal 1), lots of traffic, nice facilities (although not enough jetways).

I also have the feeling that SCL is one of the best around.

Other airports I like in Mexico are MTY and CUN!

From what I've heard I also give a vote to SCL as one of the best airports in the region!

A bit of patriotic pride...

The "América Economía" magazine voted SCL as the best airport in Latin America.

"Latin Trade" said the same...

It is just the best you can get in Latin America...LanChile and SCL.

SCL is very nice and modern, especially the ticketing areas. Reminds me of a mini-Asian style airport.

Question about US airplanes into SCL:

When I flew on MIA-SCL on an AA777, we deplaned in the early morning and went into Santiago. When we came back in a few days to depart to Miami, we checked in early, and the AA777 was sitting off to the side of the airport along with another AA 763, a UA 763, and a DL 763. Do these planes hang out all day after they arrive and head back to Miami each night? To get an idea of what I mean, look at the airport overview pic.

UAL747, you're right. AA's and Delta's aircrafts stay parked during the whole day before they depart back to the US at night.

And yes, It is a pity we've lost Alitalia,British Airways,KLM,Swiss,United and Continental.I can't wait to see them back here.

I think that perhaps the best Latin American Airport is SCL, no doubt, but I think it would be even better if it had a second runway.....I love my home airport BOG, here we have tons of traffic everyday with seven daily flights to Miami (Lanchile, Avianca, American) two daily flights to Madrid (Iberia, Avianca), to NYC (Continental, Avianca), to Panama (Copa, Avianca), 5x Flights to Paris (Air France) 3x to London (British Airways) Plus daily flights to Buenos Aires, Santiago, Lima, San Jose(CR), Havana, Atlanta, Houston, Fort Lauderdale, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo.....And don't forget the national destinations with more than 10 daily flights to Cali and Medellin, and a lot of airlines. The airport is quite small but they have already started to expand it so it can afford 16million pax a year. Right now 8M pax use this airport every year.
