Do You Feel Loyalty To Your Local Airport?

Tue Sep 30, 2003 4:17 am

Does anyone else feel loyalty towards one particular airport even though it may not be the nearest or most convenient for them any more?

In about a months time I will be relocating work/home with the result that my local airport, Leeds/Bradford (LBA) will no longer be my near neighbour, instead replaced by Humberside (HUY).

Whilst I will try and use HUY for convenience purposes (especially on charter flights as scheduled flights are currently just Aberdeen and Amsterdam), I will feel some sort of guilt at not using LBA so much as this has until now always been my local airport and the one I have enjoyed supporting and see prosper.

It's only now that I realise that my fondness for LBA is like supporting a favourite sports team, that its just not that easy to change your loyalties!

Fortunatley LBA and HUY are only about 60 miles apart so I can still make trip to LBA when needed.

I'm sure I can't be the only one who has gone through this. Anyone else had similar feelings?
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

Most definitely. Only problem is that good fares are hit-or-miss at GSP. We have a small, but exquisite facility here.
Finally made it to an airline mecca!

I can leave my house and be at MHT in less than 15 minutes and fly nonstop
to at least 13 cities (so far). I'll not originate from any other airport if I
can help it.

I live in ATL but have no problem driving 2 hours to Birmingham Alabama if I have the time and the Southwest price is favorable enough. I find B-ham much more convenient in terms of checking in, security, walking to gate, etc. You can shave approximately 45 minutes to an hour off the front-end at B-ham compared to ATL.

Interesting topic. I myself feel a certain "loyalty", fi you will, to two Canadian Airports, YVR International (I grew up in West Van, and my family was a CP one). Spent many a happy time at YVR, planespotting, etc. It is in many ways my "home" base airport. I am thrilled to see YVR "come of age" with its
beautiful new international and U.S. terminal, plus the wonderful re-design of the domestic arrivals/departures area. I always feel as if I am coming home whenever I land at YVR. I especially love the Asian theme and artwork in the centre atrium on the international departures level.

Secondly, YYZ's Pearson International, as our family relocated to YYZ, and again I have spent many a happy day there, both planespotting and venturing off from T1 and T2 on many journeys. As with YVR, I am very pleased and proud with the design and beauty of Pearson's T1-New. It will be a wonderful port of entry for those visiting Toronto for the first time, and will no doubt leave quite a positive impression upon these arriving and departing pax.

I live between DUS and DTM and I always fly from these airports. Sometimes I make an exception and fly from CGN because it's the hub of the two low-fare airlines Germanwings and Hapag-Lloyd Express.

Very interesting,
if its ever possible I fly from my homeport STR.
First flight ever from STR, near my actually hometown, good to reach by train and car,
Classic Airlines and LCC´s there.
And if nothing else happens (and if the fare´s ok) why do not fly from STR.
Always when I arrive there I know home is no more far away.

I live in Denver, and I am loyal to my Denver International Airport. That's where I work, and that's where I spot.

I forgot to mention on my above post another important factor: at B-ham, you're almost always "number one for departure" because traffic is so light there. At ATL, it's a lot of hurry-up-and-wait...you get on the plane and then you sit there for 30-40 mins in a long line waiting behind 20 departures ahead of you. Once I'm at the airport I like to be on my way, and you very much have that feeling at B-ham.

Two of the most beautiful sights to me are:

1. Twilight at YVR International, with the taxi/runway lights illuminated; the
sun casting a golden glow on the majestic Canadian Rockies to the east of
the airport. Illuminated tail lights of Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, EVA Air,
etc., as they pushback and begin their journey from the Canadian west to
the romantic far east. Aaaaaaaaaaah!

2. Twilight at YYZ Pearson International, observed from the roof of the
parking garage of Terminal One. An unforgettable sight; the odour of
JP4 fills the air! Aaaaaaaaaaah!

My most local Airports are SOU/BOH but in an hour I can get to LGW/LHR. I would be pretty upset if I had to move away from those last two (LGW/LHR) as you can get to anywhere in the world from them. Leaving SOU/BOH wouldn't be an issue as I haven't and probably will never need to fly from there.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Well, I have a lot of PRIDE in my airport, if that's what you mean. DFW is the closest airport to me which is not a low-cost carrier airport. DAL is only a few miles from my apartment, but DFW is by far my favorite for it's size and international status. I can't wait for the new international terminal to open up. Hope we get some more international carriers, but I have a feeling AA will be the one taking up most of the gates, which is still a good thing.

I guess I fit your description!

I used to live at Redwood City and that meant San Francisco was the default airport. But even after moving to south Bay, with San Jose International only 3 miles away from my home, I still fly more from San Francisco even though it is bit far (35 mins drive). But I like flying from SFO - especially going there early and seeing the new developments/construction and all those regular birds from faraway lands. Airport feels lot bigger/newer and less crowded compared to SJC - JMO.

Like this weekend, flew San Francisco - Vegas, but main reason the price was cheaper compared to San Jose - Vegas  Smile

Cheers

Even though i do not live at SFO, I am there quite a bit, and I feel loyalty to it. Im always hoping for new flights there. GUM is another, with all the japanese airlines, and all the CO planes.

I used to live about 17 miles from Leeds, but like most people in Yorkshire preferred to fly from Manchester or East Midlands as they had more flights, easier to get to and less likely to be diverted. Once had to wait 7 hours at LBA for an inbound diverted By flight!!!

Uh, yeah I'm loyal to my home airport--it only happens to be the world's busiest (and best, according to myself and several aviation authors such as Joseph P. Howard) aiport located in the world's greatest city!! The name says it all (read: I Love ORD)....

JFK.
Always try to fly out if it, even if it is less convenient than EWR. (Which i will go out of my way *not* to fly out of) To me it will always have that patina of international travel and excitement, and it definitely until recently got short shrift from the Port Authority, one of my pet peeves. one of the few things I agreed with Giuliani on.
Anything I can do to help this much maligned and waaaay too over-bashed airport is all right by me.

I am definately loyal to ORD... I flew from MDW once and i felt like i was committing a sin. but ATA was cheap so yeah... MKE is actually about the same as MDW from me, 40 minutes or so. ORD is like 15, so that explains why too. As for other airports... i feel loyal to IAD and SLC just because i have flown to them so many times. SLC ive been to liek 12 times and its like another home ya know... IAD i always pick over BWI and DCA... i dont know why but i make 2 or 3 trips to washington and i always fly to IAD and always on united. and im loyal to united as an airline.

As I'm sure many of you know, I'm in love with MCI. I can't stand the old terminal here at BDL, and the new terminal doesn't turn me on, either.

MKC would have been a nice little commuter airport if Denver hadn't so surpased Kansas City over the last 40 years...

Denver: Not Listed

Interesting.......Canadi>nBoy I didn't know you used to live here out west in Vancouver....true...always enjoyed YVR epsecially on summer sunsets where vancouver island is fading in the horizon.......

I can still remeber when the whole airport only consisted of the current domestic terminal........since 1996 its been a huge change.....

YYZ looks really nice when its finished wiht the new terminal........great spacious terminal..

Always been loyal to YVR and cant wait till 2010 when the inffluence of the olympics increases the capacity of the airport.......

Not to mention I came from HK so I had many great memories in Kai Tak........and starting new ones at Chek Lap Kok..

Sure do.

Being in college means I don't have a lot of travel oppurtunity, but I try to fly

home once a year(even though my college is in the same state) to support

the aviation industry and my hometown airport, GPT.

I'm pretty much loyal to my local airport, OMA, by default due to geography. I could drive to Lincoln Municipal about an hour away, but it isn't really worth it as the better flights come to OMA (I think ATA flies to Lincoln though). I have a friend who was willing to save a few bucks on flights by driving three hours to MCI, but I ask myself why? Burning that much car gas in a round trip (not to mention wear and tear on a car) doesn't really save that much in the long run and OMA provides plenty of flight choices, with four major airlines and two or three LCCs servicing it. I've ran the number comparisons myself when shopping for tickets and I've never found THAT good a deal with a flight originating from KCI compared to OMA.

Can't really say so. It probably doesn't sound very romantic, but I choose my airport based on my travel plans (e.g. based on destinations, departure and arrival times, landside access etc.).
I also wouldn't select the Autobahn I'm using to drive to my destination for nostalgic or whatever sentimental motives - wouldn't that sound kind of weird and geeky!?! Big grin

Therefore I usually fly out of DUS, sometimes from CGN and rarely out of DTM, even if this is my "hometown" airport.

I don't feel any loyalty to Edmonton International airport (YEG, Canada). The airport authority has levied one of the most expensive airport improvement fees in Canada and it's one of the smallest international airports! It's legalised robbery if you ask me, and alot of it probably went towards building the new golf course.

Since I'm equal distance from three airports- BWI, DCA, IAD, I don't really feel particularly loyal to one over the other. I've probably flown out of BWI the most out of the three since it's usually the cheapest, followed by IAD, but my most enjoyable airport experiences are usually at DCA. Parking is a breeze, and generally never obscenely crowded like the other two (especially BWI). The only problem at DCA is if you're going to the west coast you're most likely not going non-stop, thus DCA is my choice for shorter-haul flights.

I always fly MSY: easy access to anywhere in the New Orleans metro area, adequate parking, recently upgraded retail/restaurants, nonstops to all the major business and leisure markets (except for MCI and SEA), nice variety of aircraft, short walk between the gates and the ticket counters and, on occassion, live jazz bands playing in the West Lobby...gotta love it! I wouldn't fly from anywhere else (sorry BTR and GPT).
