China Airlines Pilot Boards Flt. Reeking Of Booze

Tue Sep 30, 2003 4:09 pm

Apologies for doing a tabloid number on the topic. The title of the article was a bit too long. Anyway, seems messed up that FAA won't (or can't?) press charges against the guy. He may fly for a Chinese airline, but he was about to fly drunk over US & Canadian airspace. You'd think he ought to have some accountability to those authorities as well as to Chinese authorities. What an ass!

China Airlines pilot barred from flight after screeners detect alcohol

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - The captain of a China Airlines passenger jet was barred from an Anchorage-to-New York flight after a breath test showed his blood-alcohol level was twice the limit for pilots, officials said Monday.

An airport screener smelled alcohol and found an open container of alcohol on the pilot. He was stopped before boarding an Airbus 340 jet last Thursday, said John Madden, a Transportation Safety Administration official. A test administered by airport police showed a blood-alcohol level of .087 per cent, a spokeswoman for Ted Stevens Anchorage International said. The Federal Aviation Administration limit for pilots is .04 per cent.

China Airlines suspended the pilot, whose name has not been made public, and the rest of the crew flew the plane out of Anchorage, the FAA said. The number of passengers on the plane was not immediately known.

FAA spokeswoman Joette Storm said she did not know whether the pilot was returning to the cockpit after an overnight stay in Anchorage or after a brief refuelling stop.

China Airlines offices in Anchorage and Los Angeles had closed Monday night and company officials could not be reached for comment.

The FAA will investigate but is not likely to take action against the pilot. "He would come under whatever the aviation authority in China is," Storm said.

I didn't know John Madden works for the TSA...

Anyways, I'm sure there is more to come from the FAA with this one.

That happened to me once - in Russia. BOTH pilots were drunk, and the airport authorities refused to let them fly. That allowed us a charming overnight visit in prestine Chelyabinsk.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Once again- China Airlines is the flagcarrier of Taiwan (the Republic of China) and not "China" (the People's Republic of China or Mainland China).

Well, I'm glad that China Airlines took the right action to suspend the pilot.
