Alitalia Merges With AF/KLM

Tue Sep 30, 2003 7:03 pm

According to Italian newspaper "La Repubblica", today Saverio Mengozzi, Alitalia CEO, announced Alitalia is going to merge with the new born AF/KLM group. Alitalia management met AF and KLM counterpart in Amsterdam to extend the existing alliance between AZ and AF also to KLM.
He also said there will be four main hubs: Paris, Amsterdam, Milan and Rome.
Mengozzi stated: "These agreement will give to Alitalia a leading role in the future European and world scenery".

AZ is going to "merge" with AF/KLM? And keep two hubs whereas AF and KLM each do have one?

Ahem...and what exactly does this gentleman dream about during nighttime??

I'm afraid the terms of takeover will be somewhat different than stated above!
I know it's only VfB but I like it!

I see it in a rather different in light of the current AZ fleet, I think that they will more likely play "second fiddle " to AF and KL on international routes (perhaps even reducing their destinations and codesharing with their partners instead), and focus instead on intra-European routes, hence the two MXP and FCO hubs. Let's not forget that, even if Rome is Italy's political capital, Milan still is by far Italy's economic capital; in the center of North Italy (which still acounts for most of Italy's economy).

Well I don't give too much credit about the things they CEOs say when the subscribe an agreement (they always try to sell the whole thing in the best way possible).
About the 4 hubs, I have to say that at the beginning the thing sounds quite strange to me, but now I think it could make sense, 'cos this is the just the present situation, pure and simple. Infact, while KLM and AF have just a major HUB, Schipol and CDG, AZ has both FCO and MXP.
I believe this is the reason.

Whilst AF have effectively just one major international hub at CDG, they also have a number of regional hubs in the likes of LYS, MRS, TLS, etc...
Back to AZ, I also think the CEO has also been having too much limoncello before making these statements  Smile

The KLM press release gives a breakdown of the new board:
5 Dutch, 11 French, and a single Italian (with all but one major positioned being held by Frenchmen (the last being the current KLM chairman who's now the lapman of the AF chairman), the rest being mainly advisory positions with no real power).

if memory serves me right, the never ending problem of 2 hubs in Italy was one of the divorce between AZ and KL...
KL wanted AZ to concentrate on 1 efficient hub at MXP but since it was taking ages it turned into a dispute and KL walked away.
it's hard to believe AZ could keep 2 hubs even if MXP is an important biz destination

will AZ still start service to SFO next summer? There is service already from CDG and AMS in this air group. Will NW merge in with them too, or will NW, DL, and CO do the same sort of thing?

I think SFO will not start. According to a news brief, IAD and Boston are getting new service for the summer of 2004. The routes are IAD to Milan and Boston to Rome.

I dont see the need for NWA-CO and DL being part of one alliance...that severly curtails competition.

I rather have NWA and CO join another alliance.

A good one to make up for CO would be :

Emirates+ MAS+ Sri Lankan+ Continental+ Kenya Airways+ Virgin Atlantic

Here you have EK covering the Middle East, Northern Africa and the Indian Subcontinent with UL, CO doing transatlantic + Latin America + USA-CANADA, VS for transatlantic and other long haul routes to Asia-Africa, Kenya Airways covering the whole of Africa and MAS covering the far East+Australia!

Hi,
I like to fly AZ, they always do their job in their special way.
If you see the business part of the story AZ will be lucky if any of the excisting Alliances allow them to join them.
If AZ join AF/KL that will be only a small part of the new company and Hubs at
MXP and FCO in the future will never be possible if they really want to see profits from this merger.
Signore Mengozzi has a dream, wake him up and bring him back to Reality.

Varig md-11:
The reason AZ and KL split up was that the Italian government did not speed up privatisation of Alitalia.
The same thing COULD prevent AZ to enter the AF - KL alliance. However, the Italian PM Berlusconi said a week ago he would do anything in his power to get AZ into the new alliance.

Behramjee:
Delta is in SkyTeam, Northwest committed itself to their partnership with KLM AFTER the AF - KL alliance.
Continental, already teaming up with DL and NW in the US will follow.
Malaysian and Kenya Airways are linked to KLM since a number of years, they are the most likely to follow.
There is room for Star, SkyTeam and OneWorld.
I do not see a fourth alliance be formed, because all the goodies are taken by now.

Yes, this usually involves male cabin crew investigating the contents of their noses whilst simoultaneously serving me the wrong drink.....I'll never forget this 'special way' of AZ.  Laugh out loud

Sorry, but it's true.

OK, the authorities will let three major European airlines merge, forming what could be the second largest airline in the world, but they won't let AA and BA codeshare trans-atlantic? Come on!!!
"Lose" is not spelled with two o's!!!!

Peter, then why do they permit the murder of KLM by Air France (I know why, politics...)?

Ssides, because EU regulators are controlled from Paris. The BA/AA deal would hurt AF, this farce would benefit AF by removing 2 competitors.

So does that mean we will see Alitalia and Air France at DTW and MSP?
