KLM A330-200s: Engine Choice?

Wed Oct 01, 2003 4:36 pm

Hi all.
With KL and AF merging, and both of these being VERY loyal GE customers, I was just wondering if anyone knew if KL has decided on the CF6 for their new A332 fleet. Maybe PW could also be a possibility, with partner NW operating Pratts.
Any updates would be welcome.
Thanks!

Good question, but with an easy answer.
KLM has CF engines on all its fleet ( 733,734,738,739,744,772,MD11) so CF is very likely.
Their new partner Air France, as well as alitalia has CF engines and even a lot of Delta aircrafts are powered with CF engines.
KLM would be stupid to but PW on their A332 fleet.

I also agree in the logic of GE winning the order, but there still hasn't been any official statement, right?
wasn't there also some talk of NW and KL to cooperate on maintenance for their 330 fleets?

While their engine selection technically has not been announced...yet...the 'storyboard' rendition from AI shows the KLM 332 with CF6 engines.

as the aircraft will I think be going to Air France and not KLM (who won't need them with the severe cuts I see in the very near future) I don't think there's any doubt.

Also, KLM is no longer in alliance with NWA as they no longer exist...
Getting US approval for the murder will likely depend on the cooperation with NWA ending anyway...

Jwenting,

Hadn't we better radio all those Northwest aircraft inbound and outbound to AMS with KL flight numbers and tell them to turn around. We may as well radio the KLM aircraft with NW flight numbers also.

We also might want to call both Boeing and Airbus and tell them to stop painting the new aircraft in KLM colors. I don't think anyone at KL or AF remembered to do this.

Blah blah blah.

You're just spouting nonsense.

If nothing else they'll be solidly together for at least 8 more years.

The future of the Wings alliance (NW/KLM alliance) is uncertain.

While it's true that it will most likely continue for 8 more years, there is a chance that it will collapse before than, one of the sides will decide to call it quits and pull out.

The NW/KLM alliance lately has been becoming weak with a lot of disagreements between the two carriers. Especially since KLM has been wanting to join Skyteam.

We'll see what happens. Maybe 8 more years, maybe not even a year...

BA,

Quite a few errors in your message.
1. NW encouraged KLM to join Skyteam and are planning to join it themselves.
2. You claim that the KL/NW alliance has been growing weak. Do you have one fact to back this up. On the contrary, both carriers would agee the alliance has grown stronger.
3. Please list the disagreements the carriers have had. I think it will be a short list.

Please give the source of your "rumors"

I beg to differ from some opinions. The NW/KL alliance is arguably one of the best in the industry. The revenue streams are so solid that "..it makes little difference if passengers fly a red or blue tail across the Atlantic.." That's a quote from the prez of KLM. NW has made similiar statements.

I thought this was a non-political site? Why do some members still show the flag of an Arab terrorist organisation, PLO, which has nothing to do with this forum? That's a bit stupid anyway considering that they don't even have an airport anymore;

Highly succesfull KLM/NWA joint venture is vital for both parties.

KLM would not have joined AF if NWA didn´t agree. NWA was informed on the progress 100 %.

KLM will introduce A330 as scheduled.

On the engines : probably CF6. KLM is a specialist on miantaining CF6 engines for many airlines.

From the KLM E&M internetsite (http://www.klm-em.com) :
We have maintained over 5500 CF6 engines since 1975.
Currently we experience 225 engine shop visits per year of which approximately 50% are third party
