QX Finally Flies To Oakland

Wed Oct 01, 2003 4:37 pm

Horizon Air now flies to all three airports in the bay area with new seasonal flights to Sun Valley, Idaho. It wil be flown with the Q400.

I hope they expand more in the Bay Area along with Alaska Airlines. I think both of them have a huge market in the Bay Area! Both should set up a mini-hub in one of the bay area airports.

I can guarentee you that neither AS or QX will seek to expand at SFO. AS used to have 5 flights a day from PDX to SFO, usually with 737s, but has cut two, which were replaced by QX CR7s due to decresed demand. SJC has always been a very good market for AS, so I can see them attempting to expand there. Its not uncommon to see a 739 overbooked into SJC. Most of the Alaska Air Group's service into the bay area is from PDX. Problem with the market there is that its saturated by UA and WN.

I wonder if QX will expand out of SJC. They could probably operate to BIL, GEG, PHX, RNO.

AS/QX have had and continue to have more ops out of Seattle to the bay area than out of PDX. As evidenced by the recent change in mainline to RJ flying, if anything I think you'll continue to see an adjustment downward in capacity out of PDX, although frequency will probably stay static. That being said, AS/QX continue to be the number one carrier between the Pac NW and California.

Qxcsa-Where do you get the info that we will not expand AS here out of SFO if I may ask? Or are you assuming just cause QX now operates 3 PDX-SFO flights? Please don't post info that you have no backing. I work here and know for a fact that expansion plans are in the works. We are unable to due lack of gates space but as we speak its being worked on.
1) Bill Ayers is pushing for us to move to the Intl terminal to get more gates, but the hold back is that the jeyways don't go down to the CRJ's.
2) We were going to get SFO-CUN, but due to lack of A/C its won't be till next year.
3) We are getting 2 more weekly ZIH flights.
4) New schedule has 3 739's operating though here.
Just seems like little misinformation on your part.
Copa-whats up man? I wouldn't expect much out of SJC, since they are pushing there limits on gates like SFO. If GEG starts from the Bay Area it will be from SFO. Also look for a chance at SFO-SAN service. With QX operating PDX-OAK/ONT/BUR its opening up more AS planes. I'll let you know as soon as I hear.

I have to agree with Qxcsa. If SFO is such a great airport, how come Horizon just decided to fly to OAK from Sun Valley? Is it because SFO is too expensive to operate at? Too unreliable (weather/delays)? Or because all of the Bay's growth is East of Oakland and South of San Jose. SJC is now the largest city in the bay. East Bay has the highest population base. I would expect Alaska and Horizon to add flights (domestic) to SJC and OAK, not SFO. Personally, SJC is my favorite airport in the Bay...easy in and out.

Could the decison to service Oakland to Sun Valley instead of San Francisco be because it is only seasonal service from December until March and it wouldn't make sense to use up more gate space or anything else just for sesonal flights? Weather delays at SFO could be also a problem.

If AS or QX really wanted to expand it's routes from SFO they could at anytime. I've flown with AS to SFO many times and they sure do have the gates and times.

QX actually used to fly two OAK-BOI flights with F-28s. I believe that was around 1997 but I could be wrong.

Please tell me they've gotten rid of the traffic light at the entrance of the airport.
