Which Major Airline Has The Worst Website?

Wed Oct 01, 2003 4:50 pm

In my mind, of all the major airlines Air France has by far the worst website. Certainly, some small African commuter may be even worse or non-existent, but talking about the major airlines, the now biggest airline in the world's site is absolutely pathetic.

Design: terrible, colours, font sizes, topography - badly done, one gets lost
Functionality: even worse. THe booking engine is a joke (one cannot book less than 24hrs before departure, not even electronic tix, and on foreign editions of their website it is even 3 days). The frequent flyer section very badly done. No real info other than the typical marketing bla-bla on their program (try figuring out how many miles it takes in First to go somewhere, or what the possibilities are to do an open jaw with a mileage tix). No useful downloads, no PC timetable. And so on....

If their goal was to make me use their call centers less, they failed dramatically. (By the way, I love FLYING Air France, I go with them about 3-4 times a week, but it is just on board that they are good. THeir ground services suck as much as their website)

A good site would be that of Lufthansa or some of the US airlines. Very professional, very useful, lots of info, and full functionalitiy on everything one wants to know about one's trip and the airline. Seems to me that there is a tradeoff between an airline being efficient and relatively hassle-free (e.g., LH, US carriers) and being a place that gives people the impression that they are something special (AF)

Your opinion, which is the worst?

I agree that of the European majors Air France is pretty poor. I can't understand why majors such as AF and AZ will not accept online bookings more than three days in advance when the technology is available to do it. I also think KLMs web sites leave a lot to be desired. Rather than having an integrated worldwide web site they choose instead to have many local web sites that don't allow bookings to be made if your jouney originates outside your own country.

In general I find BA's website very good however it annoys me that it wont let you book flights to destinations they dont serve but their alliance members do.

I wanted to find the cost of a flight from MAN > HNL, okay BA dont fly to HNL - but American do. Why it would be so difficult to book a BA flight from MAN > LHR > LAX and then AA LAX > HNL is beyond me. The BA call centre can do it straight away - just a limitation of the website.

If you try it on the website you just get a message saying BA dont serve that destination !!

I could book it seperately on BA's website and AA's but then I dont have a single booking to cover the entire journey which can be a pain if I miss a connection !!

It would help some of us out on this side of the pond if all the European and Asian airlines used the SABRE system on their online reservations.

Of the US majors, I find US Airways' site very difficult. It is riddled with bugs and difficult to find your previous reservations. Navigating the Dividend Miles part of the site is also less than easy.

The best web site, without question, is AA.com.

Even after having to call them in Dublin to confirm my booking I was assured an email shortly.
It never arrived.

I would agree with you and say Air France. They layout is awful and it's really hard to navigate round.

British Airways.

You can't book a flight that doesn't originate in your country. You have to log into that country's website. It's extremely annoying.

Ssides:

I agree that USAir's website is difficult to use, but I find Northwort's site the most annoying. You have to have a WorldPerks number to look at fares. Also, Delta's website wants payment information before it itemizes the fare structure (shows taxes and such).

Of all US airline's websites, I like AirTran's. Information is organized and easy to find. JetBlue's is also well organized, if a bit outdated.

Of the majors, I find AA is the best.
