East Midlands Whereport?

Fri Oct 03, 2003 5:09 am

Saw an article on my local news today suggesting that the authorities at EMA (East Midlands) were considering a name change as it is confusing for overseas passengers. Wondering if forum members had any interesting suggestions for a new name.

Also for non-UK members: is it confusing? Would you be more likely to fly to the airport if it was called (for example) Nottingham airport?

Anyway my starter for 10 is London Midlands - bound to attract FR!

It was on East Midlands Today tonight on BBC1.

It's in Leicestershire, has a Derbyshire post code & phone number, but most people associate it with Nottingham.

Nottingham International Airport would be nice  Big thumbs up Instead of East Midlands (Nottingham) - Castle Donington (EMA / EGNX) which is what it's as in the database. Note the Nottingham Big thumbs up

Here's the latest story on it:

East Midlands, eh?
I saw it on a screen at one airport, Easyjet flies there, right?
I'm wondering where exactly this airport is.
Britons know that, but overseas passengers, true, might be confused.
How much A is there is Airliners Net ? 0 or nothing ?

I don't personally find the East Midlands name confusing, I quite like it. Nottingham airport sounds strange, I doubt foreigners could say it. Cannot think of a more attractive name really.

Presumably if Ryanair operated there is would be London (Nottingham)!

How about Robin Hood International (Nottingham). That should get the tourists in...

I think East Midlands is really the only way to sum up the geographic region that the airport serves...if they wanted to give it a little flair then they could call it "Sherwood Forest International"...but that aint gonna happen...

How about Brian Clough International. (Note to overseas a.netters: Brian Clough was a famous football manager {coach} for both Derby County and Nottingham Forest football teams. He was a bit odd but got results)

Actually, why not call it Nottingham/Derby. A bit like Leeds/Bradford or, erm, Dallas/Fort Worth  Smile

Got to say that Manchester South is my favourite so far  Big grin Not that ridicilous either given that MAN own EMA. Having said that they won't want to compete with themselves.

Given that everything else around Nottingham is called robin hood then I dare say that may feature in the name - strange really as a read somewhere that Robin and his merry men never actually visited nottingham!!

FR will never go to AMS as its too convenient and close to the city. Call it Brussels East and you're talking!

Why Nottingham?????

Why not Leicester????
Why not Derby?????

Derby is the nearest City 8 Miles away. Notts is 12 miles and Leicester is 20 odd miles away.

It should be Derby/Nottingham airport which could then copy a lot of local hotels such as the Holiday Inn Derby/Nottingham at Sandiacre and the Ramada Jarvis Derby/Nottingham. They could then change the Hilton, Express by Holiday Inn to Derby/Nottingham.

Its wasting time and space with you lot thinking towards FR's philosphy about maybe calling EMA London North or something stoopid. I know its a joke for lots of people, but for us nearby it could cause all sorts of rifts
You dont see people commenting about all the other airports the FR fly to in the UK trying to get their name changed. Please dont get on my back this is just my opinion and i find a little silly.

BTW why did they ever call Gatwick GATWICK and not Crawley International.

Regards

Stu
