AirAsia Buys More 737s

Fri Oct 03, 2003 10:36 pm

Air Asia has bought another 11 Boeing 737-300s from GE and is upgrading its cabin interiors to feature leather seats and red carpets. The press release also states that AirAsia plans to be flying to Thailand by the end of this year...

Down south however, AirAsia is gearing up for the launch of its Johor Bahru-KL flights and is finalising agreements with SingPost and SingTel (which will sell tickets by SMS) for ticketing and a local coach company to provide the Airport bus transfer from Singapore by means of the 'Causeway Link Shuttle'.

S$9.99 AirAsia tickets being sold at Singapore post offices

Malaysia's AirAsia starts its budget flights from Senai to Kuala Lumpur from 22 October and tickets can be bought at five post offices in Singapore.
The first 10,000 tickets will cost just $9.99 - but you have to hurry because more than half have already been sold.

Tickets can also be bought either via the Internet or by placing a call to AirAsia's call centre and then pay using a credit card.

Soon there'll also be more buses from Singapore to the Senai Airport in Johor.

Two bus companies - Comfort Delgro and Causeway Link - plan to run shuttles from Jurong East and Queen's Street to Senai.

The Malaysian budget airline is also having two planes refurbished in Singapore, all ready to fly the Senai-Kuala Lumpur route.

I guess the news tells us, AK really make an impact down there. Good news and good competition. By the way, Malaysia and Thailand has open skies agreement right?

I'm assuming that AirAsia isn't 'buying' these -300s from GE, rather leasing them from GECAS. ANy idea of the previous operators of these aircraft?

AirAsia is buying 737-300s from GECAS. A few months back they bought 4. GECAS is selling them off

I assume 9M-AAI and 9M-AAJ are on their way to join AK's fleet soon right?

Any information on these planes, e.g. previous operator, delivery date, c/n etc?

Is this in addition to the plane orders announced earlier this year (some leased and some purchased?) Leather seats sound attractive, but it's annoying when you keep sliding off your seats.

I think it is the one announced previously. They issued bonds to raise funds I believe and plans to float in the not so distant future.

AirAsia has applied to the Thai Authorities to begin operating KUL-HKT-BKK from 01Dec - but this has yet to be approved. Odd that they want to stopover in HKT on the way to BKK - since presumably they won't have traffic rights between HKT and BKK.
