How's MAS Compared To CX, SQ?

I use to fly SIA from Taiwan to Australia and found it a near-perfect airline in both onboard and ground service. It has an impeccable inflight service and entertainment system and very friendly FAs (M and F) and I always travel Y Class.
Last October I had to go to Brisbane from Taiwan but all SQ flights were fully booked (SIN-BNE leg) so I had to find another airline. I didn't want to travel on EVA or Qantas or other direct flights from KHH (where I live) to BNE via TPE because of the expensive airfare (around US$100 - 110) so I thought maybe MAS was a good one (because of the new KL Airport).
Surprisingly the fare is even lower than SQ (SQ about US$840 MH about US$790) so I thought i made a good choice. But here's the BIG surprise, since I had to wait for 8 hrs in KLIA enroute to Australia and stay overnight in KL when travelling back, MAS upgraded me to Business Class for the KHH-KUL return and gave me free hotel stay (at Pan Pacific KLIA) plus free dinner and lunch! That was a real bargan (except for the 8 hr wait...)
While onboard MAS, I found their service at the same level as SIA, although the facilities such as PTV and toilets are not as good, but it was alright because they had the most comfortable seat (777-200s) on any 777s I've ever been on (SQ,CX,MH). However C Class seats on 737-400s are crap, not footrest, no PTV, no adjustable headrest, stiff material......
Food was fine, I ordered asian Vegetarian. But C Class food was better (I even took photos of it, thank God there wasn't any one in the whole row....^_^)
By the experience with MH recently, I think Malaysia Airlines is really a high class airline who provides services no worse that that of SQ's and CX's. But I think it has to work on it's frequency and route/network. For example, most of the SE Asian routes from KL goes via Kota Kinabalu which is extremely inconvenient.
I hope one day MAS is like SQ and earning a lot of money so it can buy some new aircraft to replace its filthy 737-400s.
Oh, and tell them to change their uniform! I think I'm not the only one who think that their uniform is a washed-out version of SIA's.

here is my vote:

SIA 99%
MAS 90%
CX 89%

you know the main problem with MAS is that they have
bad connections between their international's
common to wait 8 to 12 hours in KLIA for your flight:
my girlfriend and I had to wait 9 hours last time on our
way back to Amsterdam from Denpasar...we were
unlucky 'cause MAS didn't offer a single peanut but I
must that service onboard later was perfect and FA's
very friendly !! They should improve their connection
system if they want to beat SIA...and also install ptv's
in all their fleet + "fountain" of champagne

Malaysia Airlines is working hard to improve its scheduling - surprisingly the opening of the new KLIA actually increased quite a few connecting times - the reason being that MAS now has to operate from two airports at Kuala Lumpur (Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International (SAAS) and the new Kuala Lumpur International (KLIA)).

With regards to the aircraft - the Asian economic woes hit MAS hard and therefore a lot of new aircraft were deferred. MAS meanwhile is about to start shopping again and has recently been offered a fleet of Airbus A340-500 aircraft plus a mix of A321s and A320s to replace its B737-400s. This order is unlikely to go through at the moment as MAS is in fact Asia's largest B737-400 operator and (I think) only second to BA for operating B737-400s with a near perfect despatch reliability.

On the subject of MAS' uniforms - I have to admit - that is quite an insult to Malaysia Airlines and Malaysia. Malaysia Airlines actually uses the original Sarong Kebaya which is Malaysia's national dress. Singapore Airlines as an off-shoot of Malaysia Airlines when it was formed in 1972 actually borrowed the design and asked some French designer to alter its identity.

The Uniform

First I'd like to say that the comment on the MAS uniform was truly unintentional and was not for insulting the national dress of Malaysia. I just feel that the altered version which SIA wears looks shinier than that of the MAS's. And if the saying that MAS is going to change it's livery, it's a good time to change the uniform, too. Maybe by using a more dynamical colour scheme. After all the current colours look a bit faded.

I have spoken to many people who know a little about the internal workings of SQ including ex-pilots and they all say that there are some very questionable practices within the airline.
One ex-Captain had an electrical failureof some sort out of SIN on the way to Bahrain (I think). The failure was such that another failure would have left him with no power at all. Not a desireable situation. He decided that he would turn the aircraft back to SIN. The aircraft was near India at the time. He also had to dump fuel in order to bring the landing weight down to within limits.
Once on the ground, management blasted him for making the decicion to return. They also blasted him for dumping fuel! Eventually they gave in about the decision to return, but continued blasting him for the fuel dump. They claimed that Boeing has proved that the 747 can land at max. landing weight, and that nowhere in the flight manual did it actually say that a landing could not be made over the max. landing weight! The captain argued that there was no need to write this, as it was obvious, and that yes the 747 could land at max weight, but with what damage to the aircraft and at what risk to the passengers. Management claimed that SQ pilots did it all the time without problems. The captain argued that that was other captains' problems and that he was not willing to do the same. They warned him that they would fire him, but nothing ever came of it. They probably realised that their arguement wouldn't hold up anyway.
I agree with all of you to say that SQ has very good service and an as yet unblemished flying record (In recent years). However, hearing about what goes on behind the scenes I would think twice about them!

hi mas777,

I didn't want to insult at all Malaysian national dress,
in fact I know very well sarong for having travelled
so many times in this country and also in Singapore !!
Nevertheless,as far as I can remember Sarong are all
different and you can find very coloured sarongs and
others who have dull colours !! I wanted just to told
you that sarong dresses used with MAS are good but the colours are not,
they should pick other colours !! Air Taiwan is right,
SIA has shinier uniforms than MAS even if it was
altered by french stylists !!
In this way, sarong is not only the national dress of Malaysia but also for Indonesia and a little bit of Singapore.... 

To CX-boy, ok this ex-captain has been blasted but
where in this world could you find other sad stories like that ? in every company...even in CX !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree that every airline has it's little stories, but some simply have a lot more than others. You have to wonder.
No-one can say that every airline has the same standards. Some have better standards than others. Some are dodgy, some are shut down because of it. It often takes an accident or two for anyone to notice. E.g. Korean have been crashing planes for years, but only in the past couple of years has anyone taken real notice of this. There are many at Cathay who complain about the airline, but never really on the subject of safety. Just because an airline is all shiny and squeaky clean on the outside, it does not mean that things inside are just as great. (Ever been an a really nice restaurant and seen the filthy kitchen?) A friend of mine worked in a 5-star hotel in England who said that it was a complete shambles, but they hid it well enough to win awards!
Years ago, when I was much less informed, I would have flown Korean. Now I hear stories of pilots records showing their instrument ratings having been renewed with check captains who were on holidays on the date of renewal on aircraft that were in the middle of D checks! A national airline nonetheless.
Call me cynical if you like, but the aviation industry is often not as regulated as we would like, or hope.
