747 First Class/Nose Gear Noises!

Sun Oct 05, 2003 10:32 pm

Was lucky enough to fly in United First on a 747-400 recently. While we were on the ground, I was surprised at how loud the nose gear was when the plane was turning. The gear groans loudly and creates an awful racket. The other psgrs in First didn't seem the least bit annoyed, but I was surprised.

Is this why Lufthansa puts its First Class on the upper deck? Makes sense to me!

I flew first class in a JAL 777-200 recently and the pilot had some fetish with running over all of the taxiway and runway lights. There was a lot of thumping every second or so as we ran over one. However when I flew in coach in the very back of a JAL 777-300 a few months later, either we did not run over any lights or if we did, we couldn't feel it in the rear.

As a consolation...flying on a Northwest 747-200, the brakes are very noisy and rough. You sure do know how the pilot is riding the rudder pedals!

I have heard that too....I wasn't in FC but on a Corsair charter to Tahiti. My seat was in the nose section and at Tahiti Airport, there are no taxiways so the plane has to turn around on the runway.....very noisy!

The sound of the nose gear retracting after take off is even better. A sound I'll be hearing in 6 hours time on a Qantas 744 from SYD to MEL.  Smile

Oh yeah......yee haw! Lots of wind noise, gear noise, actuator noise. About as far from a "first class" experience as you can get!

I agree with the noise for a FC cabin. I realize there isn't as much space on the upper deck but I would think that would be the best place for FC...lots of privacy...I know years ago they put it up there.
