Buy!Buy!Sell!Sell!

Wed Oct 08, 2003 3:21 am

In the seventies, the jumbo era came in.Everyone had to have
one!But then they realized,it wasn't the aircraft for them.
Not just in the 70's,chose any era,
name the airline and the aircraft that just
wasn't for them.

Continental 747
PSA L-1011

Just to name a couple.

Well Delta, Eastern, and American had 747's but didn't keep them long at all.

It didn't take long for most airlines to realize that the L-1011 wasn't for them, either.

Flyboyaz and Luv2fly:
All these carriers,as you know,went to tri-jets,
DC-10 and L-1011's. So, they(airliners) went in
with big eyes and then had make adjustments.

Yep they sure did, but could you blame them? I think everyone wanted the 747 when it came out. It was THE airplane.

America West used 747s for a while, Honolulu service as well as JFK, and Nagoya Japan. Cool to look at but not the right airplane for that airline.

Anyone ever fly on one of these? Back when I worked the ramp at WN, me and a buddy often talked about non-revving PHX-JFK and back on one of those, mostly due to the fact that HP offered free alcohol at that time. Never went through with it though, and before long the 747s (as well as free alcohol) disappeared. Bummer.

SQ shortcircuited any interest that it had in the M11, only to follow it up with (what eventually proved to be) another poor choice model for them, the A343.

They corrected the A343 choice by swapping them out for high-MTOW 772ERs, but now they're flying low-MTOW 772ERs on regional routes in place of the A313s and not doing so well with it.... another fleet error!  Laugh out loud

Very true Eastbay....it was the wrong plane for HP. Ed Beauvais (founder and then CEO of HP) was a dreamer....had very good intentions and really when he left, or really was forced out, alot of things changed for the worse. This was seen mostly in employee relations. Long time employees told me that the management used to say about the 747's...."You can see hundred dollars bills blowing out the engines, everytime we fly them". Looked beautiful in our colors though! They actually put in an order for brand new B744's but that was cancelled. The ones they did operate were almost 20 years old when they got them, and were pretty unreliable. I believe towards the end we were going to do a lease with ATA and use L1011's to the HNL route, I think they did fly for us for a while, but I'm not sure.

The talk now is flying more to Central and even South America. We start San Jose, Costa Rica on 12/1. Obviously to fly to South America we would need larger planes....could see another widebody of some sort in HP colors! I've been told the SJO route is just about the limit for the A319.

Exciting to see what will happen!

Southwest and the 727, Continental phased out the Airbuses, American got rid of the MD-11 pretty quick, and I was just reading about Braniff and the Concorde. I will try to think of more.

Hummmm,

AA bought AirCal and quickly sold off ALL of their 737s and BAe-146s.

Then AA bought TWA, cancelled an open order for TW's A318s and got rid of TW's B-717s.

EasyJet and South African are supposed to be in the process to dumping B-737NGs for A319/320s.

Delta had DC-10s in their fleet twice (once in the 1970s, later after they bought Western) and sent them packing. Then, made the curious choice of the MD-11 to replace their fleet of L-1011-500s, and the A-310s they inherited from Pan Am.

Delta probably regrets buying the MD-90 (though it seemed like a good idea at the time).

Delta also briefly operated Lockheed Hercules L-100s on all-cargo routes in the 1960s.

Hawaiian tried the MD-80 briefly, before deciding it was too large for their routes.

There was a time that America West was
discribed as a fleet of every aircraft.Of
course,a little exaggerated. But the 747
was a good idea that didn't work.

I also flew MD-80 Hawaiian between the islands.
I'm surprised that didn't work ethier, as our plane was packed.

Dig this one!

I didn't know National used the 747.
It must have been for a very short time.
Enjoy!
