It really depends on where you're going. It's ok, basic domestic first class. Food is ok, but if they offer the ziti, don't get that.

Well NWs domestic first class isn't the best out there. It's not bad, but you usually only get a "meal" if the flight's over 2 or 2.5 hours long. There's no IFE at all, but the service is fine. I think breakfast flights are the best. The FAs are usually really nice in first class too, not to say that they aren't in coach, but just something that I've noticed. If you're flying later than a dinner time, then they usually just give snacks like Toblerone chocolates and stuff like that. As far as leg room, I think it's comparable to other domestic first class in a 2-class plane. All in all, it's better than coach.

No aircraft in nwa's domestic fleet have IFE or laptop power. That's about all I know.

I flew NW's first class on a DC-9 from DTW to DTW about three years ago. Let me tell you, as an AA AAdvantage member, I almost -- almost would rather have been in AA's coach section with the MRTC format than NW's first. The seat was large, but no leather and no headrest. Legroom was decent but not super (maybe a 40" pitch?). Plus, the meal service was not that great. Now, this was an older plane, so I'm sure the first class on their A319s and 320s is much better, but I wouldn't have paid the exorbitant fare or mileage to be up front on this plane.

The only neat part about this flight (and you can add this to the "famous persons" thread)? I got to sit next to fomer Dallas Cowboys fullback Darryl "Moose" Johnston.

I think the service is good but the environment is so dependent on which aircraft you fly. If you're flying DC9's don't expect something much different or special than coach.

DC9 = first class sucks, seats are hard and leg room isnt all that good

A320 + 757 = very good

MESABA .. the best

I completely agree with FLYYUL's assessment. I've flown about 25 NW segments in FC this year, and my experience is the same.

I think NW has improved quite a bit over the last 3 years. Very recently, I've noticed an improvement in their FC meals as well.

Service: NW first class service is very good from my experiences. I have also flown first with CO and DL, and NW is the best consistently (though I had 1 that with unparalleled service).

Food: Food is good, especially on flights to or from the west coast.

Seating: I agree with the assessment above, DC-9s aren't the best, but the rest of the fleet is good. I really liked 1B on a NW 753 I flew on recently.
The New American is arriving.

NW's first class on their DC-9's as average. Don't expect any perks.

The 757 cabin is very comfortable and since it is on longer segments there is usually more perks and meals.

If you're lucky, maybe you can get a DC-10. Very roomy and comfortable.

Enjoy!

I'm not sure I agree with Geg2. I've only flown Mesaba twice (MCI-MEM and STL-MEM), but on both occasions, the service was almost solicitous. I felt like I wasn't ordering enough drinks or snacks.

I'm usually a Platinum+ upgrade, so I've had the opportunity to fly first class on DC-9-10s, 30s, 40s, and 50s, A319s A320s, 757s, DC-10s, and 747-200s and from Amsterdam to Anchorage.

The most solicitous service was on the 747. Probably the most relaxed service was on a SDF-DTW flight on which I was the only first class passenger. The flight attendant and I had a great chat. Then I read while he went back to help out the other flight attendants.  Smile

THE F meals arent all that good

Usually you get the choice between a sandwich (pastrami/turkey/ham) or salad (pasta salad or mediterrenean salad)

The sandwiches have a 2 inch layer of butter on the lower bun...

FLYYUL

I don't think I'm understanding you, or we're flying two different Northwest Airlines. The one I fly does not offer sandwiches in first class -- does not for breakfast, for lunch, or for dinner.

Perhaps you're thinking of the for-purchase boxed meals available in coach on some flights?

Otherwise, I beg that you tell us how/when/where you received such service on a Northwest flight in the first class cabin.

I'd say that NW's service is as good as anyone elses at this point. I'm not aware of anyone serving meals in F under 2 hours...

NW's pitch in F is only like 34-35", but from an elite standpoint, on the A319/A320/DC-9 it's worth it to have an extra row of seats to upgrade into.

I want to fly the Avro, but never seem to have a schedule that allows it.

The First Class seats on the DC-9's aren't exactly the most comfortable seats out there. They do not come close to Continental, United, or Delta domestic First Class. Meal service is decent on NWA in first, as is the service, but the seats (on the DC-9's) leave A LOT to be desired.

The seats may suck, but the fun of a DC 9 makes up for it, in my opinion, on shorter flights!!

I have found NW's domestic First Class product to be very good when compared to the competition. But to help you out, here are two trip reports of mine that include NW First Class flights.

http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/28357/6/
http://www.airliners.net/discussions/trip_reports/read.main/34289/6/

The DC-10 should have a WBC interior, which means you should have a excellent seat on those flights.

I find NW's meals to be pretty good... sandwiches are usually offered during lunch hours -- I had an excellent Ruben with oversized pickel not to long ago.

As a regular passenger and elite level with a major airline...I have flown Northwest, Alaska and Delta in first this year on long haul, transcon flights. My rating is 1) Alaska, good seats, good food, good service and free DVD's (even though I did not use them - it's a nice touch), 2) Northwest, comfortable seats, good service, good food, 3) Delta, Seats are good (except Biz Elite which is really good), food is terrible (cold cereal) and the movie was terrible (don't bother). By the way if you get a NW flight with the World Business Seat...nice! Short haul first is just the bigger seat no matter who you are on and maybe a free beer. Horizon, has free beer on all flights at a coach price.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Before anyone asks, WBC is only on the DC-10, A330 and B747 fleet. The only domestic flights offering WBC are to/from Hawaii -- although you may get lucky and fly on an unscheduled DC-10 / B747 reposition flight.
