McDonnell Douglas scrapped plans for the DC-10-60 (which would have been a 12-meter stretch) and instead in 1984 decided to launch the MD
-11 program which would have been a DC-10 stretch (like the DC-10-60) plus several improvements such as increased range, updated wing, new lighter materials, and new updated PW4000 and GE
CF6 engines with higher thrust ratings.
Sadly as I'm sure you know, the MD
-11 was never a success.
It was a great plane from a passengers perspective...
