NW DC10-60...what Happened...?

Wed Oct 08, 2003 11:28 am

awhile back i watched a tv special dedicated to the DC10. during the show it was mentioned that NW had thought about being the lauch customer for a new 60 series DC10. would have been a stretch of the regular DC10. does anyone know what happened with that? did NW decide to get 742s instead? just kinda wondering if anyone knows what happened?

I recall a stretched DC10 proposal be MDD. I even recall artist conceptions. If memory serves, MDD offered the stretch around 77/78 but there were no takers.

The 1979 AA crash & subsequent D10 grounding severly killed future D10 orders. MDD sold very few D10's after that date.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

McDonnell Douglas scrapped plans for the DC-10-60 (which would have been a 12-meter stretch) and instead in 1984 decided to launch the MD-11 program which would have been a DC-10 stretch (like the DC-10-60) plus several improvements such as increased range, updated wing, new lighter materials, and new updated PW4000 and GE CF6 engines with higher thrust ratings.

Sadly as I'm sure you know, the MD-11 was never a success.

It was a great plane from a passengers perspective...

I like to regard the MD11 as the DC10-60 and the MD11/ER as the DC10-60/ER. It's something I've done for years. Now, whenever I see an MD11 I don't call it a DC10-60. I just like to have the thought it the back of my head simply because the MD11 IS pretty much and updated, longer DC10, kinda like the MD80 is an updated, longer DC9... BTW, I thought United was supposed to be the launch customer for the DC10-60? Oh well, doesn't matter now  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
