I wouldn't be surprise if it happens as they do have a strong partnership with Air France.

They would make an excellent addition to Skyteam in my opinion...

BA, as MEA would do it ? lol. Since former Air France chief Christian Blanc spent some time in Beirut, things are really now better with MEA.

Myk,

Well, similar in the case of MEA. As I said, Aeroflot has a strong partnership with Air France.

So that's why the situation is similar in regards to MEA joining Skyteam.

Plus, the fact that Delta is the only US airline that has flights to Russia.

Aeroflot's membership into Skyteam is going to happen, but the question is when? One of the sticking points, the fact that Aeroflot allowed smoking on all flights has been resolved with the airline going smoke-free. There has been some concerns from Skyteam over some of the Russian/Soviet-built a/c in the fleet. While there is nothing really wrong with those a/c, the public perception concerning those a/c (really nothing more than the last fringes of Cold War ideology concerning the "superiority" of Western-built products) makes Skyteam a little reluctant to add Aeroflot. Most industry pundits thought that Aeroflot would have been in Skyteam by 2001, but no dice.

MEA would most likely make a sweet addition to SkyTeam, but opposition from the USA might make that difficult.

Sure that wouldnt prevent the carrier from joining, but then what use would it be* to SkyTeam (or any other alliance) if it/its code/its FFP were essentially banned from the majority of an entire continent (which happens to possess the world's largest market)?

*and from the alternate perspective, how much will be offered to it?

I don't think the US would care.

From the US, you can buy a ticket to Beirut on Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, British Airways, etc.

MEA joining Skyteam wouldn't be much different.

Not to mention that MEA has ticket offices in the US and offers flights to Beirut through Air France from the US to Paris, then on MEA or Air France from Paris to Beirut.

is MEA banned from Canada and Mexico too?

No they aren't. Although Canada did pull Air Canada's permit to fly to Beirut, there are no rules saying airlines can't fly to/from Beirut. Same with Mexico, although traffic between Mexico and Lebanon is almost nonexistent, so don't count on any flight happening anytime soon.

Aeroflot is "in the line" to join SkyTeam. It was decided quite a longtime ago. The conditions were/are a complete reorganisation of the fleet, Safety procedures, Security and PAX services on ground and on board. All theses items had to improve to reach the western standards. Aeroflot did a really good job. An "Audit" is actually on the way to verify all the improvements, so Aeroflot should not be long to join Skyteam.

MEA, South African Airways, KLM/CO/NW and Malaysia Airlines should be the next ones.
Tunis Air and Royal Air Maroc are "in talks" also, as well as EMIRATES... !!!

Aeroflot has a huge network in the "domestic" CIS market, it has flights to all the former Soviet republics and that alone could tempt SkyTeam.

As for MEA, SkyTeam will help the company to expand eastwards to the Gulf and Far East and even Sydney. I hope it happens before any other airline in the region.

Even South African ??? SA has strong links to LH and Star Alliance are willing to improve their presence in the african market. So I think that, if someday SA joins an Alliance, it would be Star.

On the other Hand, the KLM/AF merger will bring Kenya Airways (who codesares with KLM) to the AF market, and why not, in the future, see Kenya Airlines as a member of Skyteam

definitely, Africa and the middle east are big Holes in the Alliances network, even if there are not all (except Middle East) high yield traffic.

Myk,

Codeshare doesn't mean "Alliance".

Air France has a strong code-share agreement with Austrian on CDG-VIE and with FINNAIR on CDG-HEL, and these two airlines are both members of STAR Alliance...

JAL has a strong Code-Share agreement with both BA and AF.

SAA is indeed in final talks to join SkyTeam and is likely to join the AF/DL/AZ/CS/AM/KE alliance VERY soon.

FLYSSC,

I was wondering, where did you hear about MEA joining Skyteam and if you know anymore information?

Flyssc

I know the difference between codeshare and other stuff ! The fact is that Sa has strong links to LH, and people from Jo'burg airport told me this summer that they think that SA will join STAR in the future, without giving a concrete date !

How would Aeroflot be a useful addition to SkyTeam? Since when is SVO a convenient connection point to anywhere outside Russia or the CIS? I mean, why would an airline like Air France want to associate themself with an airline notorious for indifferent...if not awful service. There is not a lot of traffic in Europe to other destinations in Russia, besides SVO, LED, or the oil cities in the CIS.

I also thought that the completion (or even beginning) of SVO-III was also a contingent for Aeroflot joining Skyteam? SVO-II really would drive passengers away who were not expecting it. Also, Aeroflot ticket personnel (especially outside of Moscow) are some of the rudest, most indifferent people I have ever met.
