Countries Without Flagcarrier

Wed Oct 08, 2003 7:51 pm

The topic says it all !

I think we have to look to Africa, something like Tchad, or even in Asia with Maldives, since Air Maldives was grounded.

Any other countries ?

The US dosent really have an official flag carrier. We have several large privately owned airlines but no flag carrier.

Although the Venezuelan Government said last week that it's planning to create a new version of it, that would be called 'Conviasa'.

What's the definition of flag carrier? The largest carrier of a particular country? Makes not much sense to just list of the biggest or best known airline from each country if that's not the definition of "flag carrier".

There are a lot of countries that have no or no longer have a flag carrier, defined by "Government Owned".

However, thought it has been privatized, I would argue BA is still the flag carrier of Britain. KLM is still the flag carrier of the Netherlands (actually, the current deal has the current owners of KLM with 51% stake, perhaps until Open Skies takes effect).

In any event, there are only a few countries that don't have some sort of official, flag carrier. The US, some smaller/poorer countries without the money, and a few former soviet-block states. Everyone else has a legacy flag carrier or something official.

Of course the USA has flag carriers. The term flag carrier simply means an airline that holds a licence to operate from its own country to another country under a restrictive bilateral agreement.

As far as government owned is concerned, the term flag carrier is often misused. As an example, in the 1970s BA was government owned but it wasn't the only flag carrier in the UK. British Caledonian was also a UK flag carrier - on routes to Africa - even though it was privately owned.

Dear Hoons90 : Taca it´s a private group... not from Costa Rica.
I think nowadays most of the countries hasn´t flagcarriers, since the wave of privatizations, most of the airlines are now owned by private companies/groups/persons

Any country with restrictive bilateral agreements (as opposed to open skies agreements) has flag carriers - the airline or airlines that are licensed to operate a route under that bilateral agreement. The term flag carrier simply means an airline that holds a licence to operate from its own country to another country under a restrictive bilateral agreement. It has NOTHING to do with ownership, state or otherwise.

yeah, i dont think Uruguay has one, neither does Palau. I dont think San Marino has a flag carrier, lol, and I dont think Honduras has one, although an airline in Grupo Taca may be its flag carrier. btw, when Copa was in Grupo Taca, did they have thier planes painted in full TACA colors?
