Sri Lankan Airlines Increases European Flights

Thu Oct 09, 2003 2:21 pm

According to www.justplanes.com, Sri Lankan Airlines is adding additional flights to the following cities as part of its Winter timetable beginning Oct 26th :

1. London Heathrow - 9 to 11 times a week
2. Frankfurt - 1 to 3 flights a week
3. Kuala Lumpur - 5 to 7 flights a week
4. Paris - 3 to 4 flights a week
5. Zurich - 4 to 5 flights a week

In addition SriLankan will increase its fleet from 11 to 13 aircraft with the addition of 2 Airbus A340s later this month.

*They are getting loads of pax to fly them from Europe-USA-CAN to MALE as well as to India as theyre inflight product and service is getting a huge reputation boost around the world. Plus lots of their Euro flights are via DXB where they too have full rights to carry pax to Europe and back!

actually none of their own european flights are via Dubai anymore, anyway not since July 2001. All their flights to ZRH, FRA, PAR and LHR are non-stop.
Only the Munich and Dusseldorf code shares are via Dubai, operated by EK metal.

Excellent news! Their LHR flights have increased somewhat in recent years, obviously testament to both its growing reputation as a quality airline and its large pool of loyal flyers.

I cannot wait to fly LHR-MLE-CMB-UL / WMKK), Malaysia">KUL-SIN-CMB-LHR will UL next month! Big grin

Where are the two extra A340s coming from? AOM? SIA?

Na, Its likely to be two EX AOM A340-200, as Emirates has pretty much got all of SQ's remaning A340-300s now on lease. With winter setting in the Northern Hemisphere soon, Sri Lankan is making a wise move in upping services to Europe. Already, there is a large contingent of poms, coming to Sri Lanka to watch the Cricket later in the year! Apparently, its impossible to get hotel rooms in Colombo during this time... Smile

this is old news and had been published several month ago.

justplanes.com is not always very up to date and deliveries old news as new news. ZRH in fact has already 5 flights but the 5th flight went till now via FRA and it becomes a turn around only.

342 are definitively ex AOM

Any idea if they plan to return to Beirut (BEY) eventually?

They flew the route 2x weekly A340-300. 1x weekly it was non-stop and the other was through Kuwait (KWI)

UL should now seriously look into flying to MANCHESTER 2-3 times a week from CMB via MLE using A 343s as MAN hosts thousands of Indians-Paks-Bengalis-Sri Lankans-Orientals etc and UL covers South-North India v well as well as KHI and DAC.

Plus MLE is a popular tourist destination for Britishers and with ULs superior eco class product, its bound to get many pax to MLE. As well from MAN, UL can take pax easily to important Far East cities too.

It would be ideal if MAN was served 3 times a week CMB-MLE-MAN-MLE-CMB with A 343s or A 332s(would it face any payload restriction as its a 10-11 hr flight MLE-MAN nonstop???)

UL no longer have DAC covered.

UL have never mentioned MAN in any of their plans before but I can see definite demand for a service. Back in the 80s Singapore AIrlnes had their twice weekly SIN-MAN flights route via CMB and either VIE or BRU.

What has happened to their return to Italy, to either MXP or FCO? This was talked about theme arlier on in the year, and with the two A340s coming on soon there has not been any plan to include Italy this year - I thought this would have been their priority for winter.

I'm sure MAN was an issue some time ago and they had plans to fly CMB-ZRH-MAN vv. - But for the moment it looks like the next European destination FCO (Italy). But one is for sure, if SriLankan Airlines doesn't go CMB-MLE-LHR the wouldn't go for a CMB-MLE-MAN at all.

Last weekend I have seen an all white 340 parked in a Hanger at BIA and I have been told that the 2nd should be there during the next few days. 18 J config.

There are plans that UL wants to get every year an additional long-haul plane until 2008 and with the 2nd 342 which will be a back up for maintenance till next year could then already be used for services into FCO and China, both scheduled for next year.
