Las Vegas Hotels And LAS

Thu Oct 09, 2003 2:44 pm

I am going to shoot over to vegas in a coming weekend and I was wondering if anyone has stayed in an hotel room in vegas with really great views of mccarren and the runways. It would seem like an easy place to get a room that gets great views of operations. I know Mandalay Bay has good views how about others. {It would be nice coming back to the room at 7 am and then watching ops for a few hours before bed  Smile/happy/getting dizzy }

MGM Grand has some nice views too. The Luxor might as well.

The Mirage & Treasure Island are in position to have good views from the higher levels.

Stayed in the LV Hilton about a month ago, and was surprised to see flights landing on the north/south runway (whichever number that one is). As a matter of fact, the room was in perfect position to see flights landing (although I don't believe this is the preferred runway).

I can definitely recommend the Luxor hotel. I stayed there on the 20th floor at the side facing the airport. Magnificent view of the airport and the main runway crossing from left to right... I almost forgot the casino...

This was discussed extensively on the aviation photography forum a few weeks ago - do a search there.

Yeah, depending what side you're on Luxor and Mandalay Bay have some awesome views. Even though I'd be out until 4AM or so, I'd get up around sunrise each day to watch the sun rise over LAS and the first birds come in for the day.

Mandalay Bay and Luxor have good unobstructed views.... be careful though at the Luxor. When I was there a few months ago (and asked for a room with an airport view), that request could not be accommodated and I ended up with a great view of another part of the hotel. It stunk - I saw nothing from the hotel room.

I would also recommend the Tropicana. I had a great view from the far tower, and the north/south runways were pretty close. OK, the hotel is not as nice or modern as MGM Grand or even the Luxor, but it is comfortable and will even save you a few bucks! The pool is pretty good too. There is also the San Remo hotel that is REALLY close to the runways but I have never been there or known anyone who stayed there.

If part of the reason you are going to LAS is to planespot, may I recommend walking south on Las Vegas Blvd to the southwestern tip of the airport (about 1 mile from M Bay). Across the street is a Jack-in-the-Box and a gas station - they sell beer! - and my buddy and I spent a few hours sitting on the bus stop bench watching planes, drinking Mexican beer and eating bad chicken strips. It was great! Depending on the direction of the aircraft, it is hard to imagine being much closer to the action!  Smile

I stayed at the Luxor in August on the 14th floor of the pyramid in a room facing LAS, nice views!

I'm not sure if you can request a room facing the airport though.

i am a flight instructor in northern az, and i always fly with my students into las, probably once a week. mandalay bay probably number one, with luxor, tropicana and mgm all coming in second, but don't forget, the hotel can put you on any side of the hotel they want to, so call ahead that day and speak with them personally, a tine hotel that most don't know about is the hotel san remo, older vintage hotel where a lot of crews stay, they have about a ten story tower and their airport facing rooms aren't bad. if they are using runway 1/19, the las vegas hilton is then a winner, but that is not too often.

Hello,

I have been to vegas 9 times, and 3 times with a requested airport view room. You cannot beat mandalay bay from the high floors(20+), and it beats luxor if you can get the right view, which is kind of tricky in the 3 pointed building. The MGM Grand is pretty good, as i have stayed in a mccarren view room as well. My choice is MB if it all works out.

PS.

No, they are not at all.

Yep, if you get lucky, the Luxor has some nice views, if you are a non-smoker, make sure that you get a high floor.

JpetekYXMD80: I stand corrected, having not stayed at either, I was simply making an educated guess based on their location. Sorry bout that!

If cost is a problem, consider the Excalibur, if they can give you a room high enough and on the proper side.

Mandalay Bay.  Big thumbs up I think Tropicana offers good views as well if you are on a budget.

I agree, Luxor is good. Terrible's is also good if you're on a budget. It's off the strip. I had a room that faced the rear and had a great view of incoming flights.

stayed in Luxor 2 weeks ago and specifically asked for a strip view room.

I think there are 30 or 32 floors and we were on the 27th. The view was grand! While the finacee was busy getting ready, all I had to do was sit in bed and watch planes take off.

The room was perfect for sunrise too. We slept with the curtains open and next AM, the sun arose, we sat in bed , watched, then watched some of those Area 51 planes take offf, then back to sleep.

If you want, email me via my profiel and I can send you a phot that I took from the room so what you have an idea of the view.

Godspeed, mirrodie

I stayed at the Luxor in March for 2 nights and had a jacuzzi suite with a view of the airport. Terrific scenes all day long of planes taking off and landing.

I also recommend the pool area of the Mandalay Bay, if you can get in. It is next door. I saw the Virgin 747-400 take off from there. It flew right over me.

Awesome.
