Martinair In Seattle?

Thu Oct 09, 2003 5:03 pm

I heard a few years back that Martinair used to offer a good flight to Germany from Seattle (or maybe it was Europe, my German teacher told me this a few years ago). Anyways, I just checked (for fun) the database for MD-11 flights in Seattle, and I found that Martinair was at SEA on Sept. 23 of this year.

So, I was wondering...any info as to why Martinair was in Seattle on this day? Is it a weekly flight? A charter flight? Something else?

Any info is appreciated, thanks in advance!

The regi is PH-MCR. This machine is flying cargo.

Martinair had scheduled service to Seattle (fromm AMS) in the past.

While Martinair only flies cargo to Seattle now, they used to fly scheduled summer charters. I believe these flights were routed AMS-SEA-OAK-SEA-AMS. I've flown the SEA-AMS-SEA segment a few times: in 1985 on a DC-10-30 (with Air Seychelles logos on it - VERY exotic for Seattle), in 1989 on a 747-200C (with a Qantas tail!), and in 1994 on a 767-300. The other airline logos were due to leasing the planes out during the off-season.

I believe Martinair stopped flying passengers to Seattle in the mid-1990s (perhaps when NWA started its SEA-AMS service?). Since then, Martinair has moved its flights north to Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton, all with 767-300s.

Now Seattle, gets the 2 weekly cargo flights on an MD11F or CF per FlySwiss.

No, Martinair dropped all passenger flights to the US west coast. The only US destinations to which Martinair operates passenger service are Miami and Orlando.

You are right, Erik. Martinair discontinued their passenger flights to Seattle when Northwest began SEA-AMS service. The reason is because the NW service is a code-share flight with KLM, and Martinair does not have its passenger service compete with KLM, which happens to own a large part of it.
