First product to leap from Song to DL... let's hope few more follow  Big grin

I do however, think this one might actually be a good thing

It's a good concept, but it sounds like a tremendous hassle for the FAs. I envision customers asking WAY to many questions about the numerous selections offered, and the FAs getting bogged down with that plus handling change and credit card transactions.

I'd be interested in hearing what you FAs think about it.

I agree with what you are saying, as no airline does a good job of explaining any change that is happening, be it positive or negative.

Hello,

I am just wondering, if the price for ticket is going to be cheaper. I mean, lets say one pays $500 for ticket w/meal included. Are they going to charge $450 b/c the meal is not included in the ticket.

Thanks,

Doubtful that ticket prices will go down. Most tickets are already sold at a loss. This move is an attempt to recover some of those losses.

I do not remember the exact cost tho I remember reading about Midwest paying the most for meals, something over $5.00 per pax, and all the rest were under $2.00, that is what I remember reading and it has been a while since I read it.

Will this be introduced on all DL scheduled domestic flights? If yes, is there going to be a minimum of miles you have to do before the option is available?

Anyway, I would prefer this above peanuts.

who'd like to wager on how long it'll be before bringing external food onboard is prohibited?  Sad

Luv2fly: XY used to spend $11.00/pax for food - back when the wine, pie, cookies, and plates of warm food were complimentary of Midwest. I have not flown them in a while, but they have been selling food (not in a test mode) for a while now, at least since June/July. BTW Does anyone know the success of Midwest's program of selling food on their flights, especially because it was such a 180° turn from their historical offering and reputation?

I doubt the ticket price will go down. And definitely a "Song-Beta Mainline Program"

The only negative to the announcement by DL is they have not given the general category of how the offering would apply, like:

-Domestic flights of 3 hours or more departing between 4:00 A.M. and 8:00 P.M.

I would imagine it to be something like that, but don't expect it on your flight from Atlanta to Savannah!

Just for the record, US Airways was the first major to have a food for purchase program, and yes, it is permanent. It may not be on all flights, but it is a done deal and will continue indefinately.

Flairport:

Yep, f/c free - but it may be the same food for sale in the back. Further, if you are a Platinum medallion in the economy cabin, food is free (does not apply to Song flights).

Is Delta going to improve the quality of food for sale? I am supportive of selling food onboard aircraft as long as it represents a tangible increase in quality. I'll pay up to $20 for an in-flight meal if it is of a good quality. Also, I am fully willing to pre-order food at the time I book my ticket. Perhaps with airlines finally providing optional food that you pay for, the standard of food will reach the level that you find on, for instance, railroad dining cars.

You bring up an interesting point...they've stopped serving peanuts due to people having deathly allergies...yet what's to stop someone from bringing peanuts aboard?

I like the credit card reader idea....that's going to be really convenient and time-saving.

I have flown on 2 flights with the test program. One was LAX to DFW, and the other was ATL to LAX. THe food that I purchased was of quality and reasonable compared to what one would pay at the airport. The breads were fresh, and there portions were large. The credit card option worked very well, and made it easier. My only suggestion, which I actually turned into the survey regarding the test, was that SkyMiles Gold members should get the meals free as well. (FYI, I'm not a God member, I just thought it would be good business.)

The food in FC is still free, though it is the same that is being sold in coach. In addition, they offer the first class passengers anything they want and as much of it as they want. I was curious, though, if the First Class F/A put the meals on china or just as it was sold in coach.

Maybe they will package 2 packs together and call it a deluxe snack pack and then be able to charge for it.

We know you are not a God member. You have to fly 1 billion miles to become a God member! Couldn't resist.

Maybe I'll have my FA friend on a flight and get it free then. The airline will probably do that!

They may say this is permanent, but this is after all the airline industry. A place where absolutely NOTHING is permanent.

I experienced the pay-for-food concept on a NW flight from DCA-MSP this past summer. They passed out menus with four different meals displayed, but only one was offered, depending on the time of day. They charged $10.00, cash only. It wasn't very good. The large sandwich was mostly very dry bread. It's a good thing they gave me a whole can of Coke, or I couldn't have swallowed it all. Even so, I only ate about half of it. On the return flight, in anticipation of being offered the brunch meal, which looked really good on the menu, I didn't eat breakfast before I left. Much to my dismay, food wasn't sold on that flight, so I went hungry. If people don't know ahead of time if food will be sold on their flight, how does the airline expect to sell much of it? On food flights, some people will have already eaten, not knowing food will be available on the flight. I hope Delta's system works better than Northwest's.
