Beirut Arrivals At Night

Fri Oct 10, 2003 11:48 am

Most of the European carriers with the exception of Air France and British Airways have arrival times into Beirut anywhere between 12:00 A.M. and 4:00 A.M. I think these times are very inconvenient for passengers. Can anyone explain why this is the way it is?

It seems like the European carriers are in a hurry to get in and out of Beirut. The departure times are even more inconvenient....anywhere between 2:00 A.M. and 4:30 A.M. Alitalia, for example, arrives from MXP (Milan) at 1:20 A.M. usually and departs before twilight at 4:20 A.M. That means a passenger would have to be an the airport by about 2:00 A.M. (the 2 hour thing). I appreciate the replies!

Olympic Airways accroding to their timtables depart Athens at 0105 and arrive into Beirut at 0255. Four of their outgoing flights depart Beirut at 0430 and arrive into Athens at 0630.

I guess the European carriers would rather make some money out of these flights then have the aircraft sitting idle in their respective home cities. Alternatively, Beirut may be used as a transit city to other Middle Eastern destinations.

However, I could be wrong...

They have them timed this way for connections to North and South America.

Flights from North and South America typically arrive in Europe during the afternoon, so the flights to Beirut need to depart late enough to allow passengers from North and South America to catch the flights to Beirut.

Same thing goes for departing Beirut, they need to arrive in Europe early in the morning which is when North and South America flights typically depart.

Early arrivals to Europe gives them good connections to the rest of their European network. Don't forget that most airlines offer competitive prices for flights from Beirut to major European cities.
And as BA said, the flights to the Americas is also a factor.

Alitalia has two flights a week departing in the afternoon too.

Absolutely right OD720, the european carriers want to feed their hub with early morning arrivals to facilitate the connections.

Thank you very much for the insight everyone. After thinking about it, it makes a lot more sense.

Besides, I think there is nothing more beautiful than arriving in Beirut at night and descending upon the city lights. For those who have seen it its an amazing sight!

However, the majority of American flights to Europe arrive in the morning and before noon time. This is great news for MEA since they are one of the few airlines operating to Beirut during the daytime from Europe. But for the North American travelers who are waiting for their connecting flight on the same airline or a codeshare flight, its up to 14 hours of layover! My friend had to do this last year through AMS and it was a very difficult trip.

It is the same thing in most of the Middle-East and transcaucasian airports. Yerevan airport's international traffic bound for Europe also arrives around 1:00-2:00 AM and leaves 1 or 2 hours later to make the connections across Europe and the Americas. Pretty much the same thing in Georgia, and Azerbaijan!
