Funny And Lame: Yankees And Red Sox Charters

Fri Oct 10, 2003 12:42 pm

WOW! This has to be one of the funniest charters for 2 reasons:
1) it is almost quicker to just drive
2) it is so short, why not wait until morning?

LGA-BOS is a drive of about 4 hours or so...much quicker to fly for one hour and then sleep in a hotel room rather than drive 4 hours on a relatively uncomfortable bus and lose good sleep...

First and foremost they have the money to do it. Second, believe it or not it's easier for them to bus down to LGA and fly out to BOS then it is to load up charters and equipment vehicles for a road trip. Third, they are contractually obligated (player contracts) to provide air transportation unless there are extenuating circumstances. About the only trips you ever see driven in MLB is New York to Philadelphia and Baltimore to Philadelphia (and return). Milwaukee to Chicago (and return) is also driven sometimes.

New York to Boston isn't exactly a short hop on a bus. I think it makes 100% perfect sense to fly it. It's a very popular business route for USAirways and the like for that reason.

Plus, it's advantageous to get the stress of a flight out of the way as quickly as possible before the next game. From an athletic standpoint, it's just common sense.

It's not like these players have to get to the airport 90 minutes early like we do. They just show up....maybe go through a metal detector and get on the plane. It's probably hassle free unlike a cramped bus ride for 4 hours.

It's smart to go right after the game so they can practice today, and don't have to worry about travelling on the same day as their game in case of problems with the plane, weather, etc.

Earlier in the year the Sox took the Acela down to NY.

Actually, considering that the teams are all together there at Yankee Stadium, it logistically makes sense for them to just head over to LGA in buses and get it over with, rather than having to get everyone together the next morning. You'd also figure that everyone's going to be pretty hyped up because of the game and not likely to be sleeping for a while. And it keeps them from getting into trouble at some bar for one night...  Big grin

The bus/train ride is about 4 boring hours, and they'd lose being able to practice for that time. And since it's a charter the total trip time from Yankee Stadium to the hotel in Boston is likely under two hours...

Most teams arrive on the airport by bus "airside" and board the aircraft from the ramp, bus pulls up to aircraft and team boards either by airstairs or up the stairs that are attached to the jetway. This saves a lot of time
