SAS Starts Service To Shanghai!

Sat Oct 11, 2003 3:15 pm

Scandinaivan Airlines, SAS, will start service from Copenhagen to Shanghai from the summerschedule 2004.
Three weekly flights with an Airbus 340-300 for 261 seats.
Through rearrangements of the current longhaul fleet, this new
route will be possible.
Final decision will be made when all permissions approved.

It´s Scandinavian!

Well I hope this actually eventuates. Would be nice to see SAS grow its intercontinental network, esp in the Far East as Finnair seems to have a stronger presence there.
Hopefuly HKG and DEL will be back on line as well. As well as the SFO service actually taking off
I remember SK first discussed Shanghai back in 1999 as a possibility.

I dont see SAS returning to DEL by next year, they can instead easily codeshare with LH B 744 flights on the Indian routes by feeding them pax from OSLO-STOCK and CPH!!! As for HKG too I dont see it happening. If SAS wants to restart Indian flights then it first must have better access of its own to the US West Coast (LAX-SFO) and YYZ.

Yeah FINNAIR has a huge reputable presence in Asia and is highly dependant on it for yield pax.

Would it be possible for SK to extend the PVG flights to HKG? Or is mainland China completely off limits with regards to 5th freedom?

Great news that they're able to start a new route, though I hadn't imagined that it would be Shanghai!

Hi Birka340,

Where from do you have this information?

Down here at Copenhagen we haven't heard anything about this, but I hope it's true - a route to Shanghai would be nice and give SAS the opportunity to compete with Finnair in this market.

My impression is that this route has been on planned for for many years, but nothing happened after 9/11. Good to see that things start to move again, and I can just wish them luck. Just hope that this is not another free floating rumor on the internet...

It must mean that they have to place some more orders for A343 or 333 or perhaps they will cut more in there longhault routes.

I honestly think that SFO ops are not that far off. The traffic is finally starting to pick up, and I think that SAS will go to SFO. Other possible airlines you could see there in the near future are GF, Orient Thai, AZ, AI, PIA, EI and maybe China Eastern or Southern. VN is coming too.

According to SAS,the Shanghai route will be possible due to cutbacks elsewhere in the Intercontinental route network. Most likely there will be cutbacks in the CPH-BKK frequencies as this route (also acc. to SAS) is currently operating at a loss, most pax being of the "leisure" variety and not business class.
No dates or news of any other possible destinations.

SAS will recevie a fourth Airbus A330-300 in March 2004.
Prereserved registration: OY-KBS "Erik Viking"

I think this new A330 will operate either CPH-IAD/ORD/SEA
and todays equipment A340 on these routes will be tranfered
to the new SHA-route.

The news about the new route is informed via Agents Info and was
laste week on the internal Intranet.

It sure is Scandinavian!  Smile

I think the plan, pre 9-11, was to start with Shanghai, then LAX, then HKG, then SFO and then a direct route from CPH-SIN...

Well I hope that the LAX route will be next, as all travel from Scandinavia to the west coast and the Pacific is done with other airlines with a transit at FRA or LHR...So this route could save us Danes the trouble of at least one transit per trip...!

The future looks interesting!

Got of an SAS flight last night and what should I say... CPH-SEA-FRA vv with them and its just... "It's Scandinavian!"  Wink/being sarcastic

Very impressed. My first time in Economy on long haul and SK simply didn't "scare" me with the Economy seating as compared to business. Will definitely fly with them again anytime. VERY friendly flight crew.

Does the A330-300 have sufficient range to fly nonstop between Scandinavia and the US west coast? And didn't SK used to fly to Singapore with their 767-300s?

A couple of months ago there was a rumour about SAS starting a 3x weekly or so route from CPH-JNB, any word on if that route is still on the drawing board. Also did SAS ever start flights to Iraq? If so does anyone know how those are doing?

in August 2001, SAS announced SFO service, but then 9/11 came, and the plans were shelved. I think that SFO could be the next long haul destination from SAS

It was the route CPH - Basra in Iraq which was expected to be prolonged to JNB. So far it seems like SAS isn't that eager to start Copenhagen-Basra service due to the safety in Iraq. We just have to wait and see I guess.

Starting LAX again instead of SFO would be more logical I think. SAS had a strong presence at LAX and even flew 747:s for a while. With the IT-business in decline, I don´t think SFO is that lucrative for SAS anymore...
