Early B747 Model Replacement

Since Boeing came out with the B777-300 earlier than the A340-600, did it not get a lead on Airbus as far as early B747 model replacement aircraft is concerned. Granted that B777-300 has a far lower range than A340-600, it did provide a very advanced and efficient replacement for early model 747s on many routes. Any way which carrier would push its aircraft to the maximum range capacity ? Also has Boeing been able to sell more B777-300ERs than A340-600s ?

KE is the only airline to use the 773A for scheduled transpacific ops... often ICN-HNL, and sometimes NRT-LAX. No airline flies the 773A transatlantically.

AF remains the only non-Asian airline to commit to the 773, and they chose the B-market version, not the A-market.

Interestingly enough, 773ER sales outpaced and outsold A346 sales for a quite a while. This is significant as the A346 has been available nearly twice as long as the 773ER. The A346 has recently reclaimed the lead with the advent of the HGW version, and orders from TG and EK.

The 777-300 and -300ER are two vastly different airplanes, when it comes to the markets they are targeting.

Basically the -300 is a 'regional' airplane aimed only at the big SE Asian carriers (CX, SQ, NH, JL, ...) that were looking for a 747-200/300 replacement on intra-Asian or even domestic trips.

The -300ER is aimed at long-haul routes that the most capable -200ERs (298t 656,000lb) are operated on.

A small MTOW comparison that says it all:
-300 -- 660,000lb 299t
-300ER -- 775,000lb 352t
