LH Starts With Alphanumeric Callsigns

Mon Oct 13, 2003 1:50 am

Starting on tuesday Oct 14th Lufthansa will introduce a new system of alphanumeric callsigns for all flights within the area of Eurocontrol. This new system replaces the old one which simply generated callsigns out of the trip number (e.g. LH230 FRA-STR became DLH230). In the future LH callsigns seem to have no logical system at all - so enthusiasts listening to ATC communication won`t be able to identify a LH flight by its callsign (e.g. LH230 will be DLH9VD shortly!).
Lufthansa and ATC hope to reduce cases of "callsign confusions" where air-traffic-controllers mixed up callsigns of aircraft within their area of competence.

Thanks for this interesting information! Is LH the only airline which is intoducing this new callsigns or will other airline follow?

Many airlines use these callsigns.
Examples: SN2901 - DAT77A
OS5593 - TYR591W
and more....

There has been an Eurocontrol study that letters at the end of a tripnumbers help significantly to differ flights in radio communication - on both sides: ATC and A/C.

I've read somewhere that this switch will also permit to reform the allocation of flight numbers, i.e. especially on domestic and European routes we won't have this seemingly chaotic system of flight numbers anymore.
Until now, the flight numbers were allocated to the various segments in order not to have two flights with almost the same numbers in the air at the same time within one ATC area (e.g LH1010 and LH1100).

Obviously the trial they had at the beginning of September was successful. MAN had DLH 3PV/DLH 4EF being used on the LH 5944/5933 (MUC-MAN/MAN-MUC).
