Worst UK & Ireland Airline?

Mon Oct 13, 2003 5:53 am

OK, there are lots of different airlines in the UK... Regional, low cost, major etc.... But which is the worst?

Personally I would have to say FlyBE, they seem to have delay after delay + many bad personal experiences

A close 2nd would be RYANAIR simply because they don't care for their passengers, which I have suffered from on the CWL - DUB route!

Espeically with those old 737-200's!

Ryanair should seriously retire those as soon as possible - they are so loud!!

Hey, you get what you pay for!
(Yes, we know that not all ryanair flights are super-cheap, but still...)

I would point the finger at BA and BMI.

BA + BMI they do have bad reviews too, although when I have flown with them they have been excellent!

How can Ryanair possibly be the worst, when they have done the most to widen access to air travel?....we will probably get all the Ryanair bashers join in now, I just don't get this attitude, especially when the very same people that complain about Ryanair on this forum continuously file more & more trip reports....on RYANAIR!

Why are you giving your money to such a "terrible" airline? Either you hate them, or you don't....

I've flown BA, BMI, FR, EZY and they are all excellent.

p.s. isn't this a silly topic? Why have a 'worst' airline? Isn't that a bit childish?

Dont know if its a silly topic - but Ryanair get my vote - nice of them to leave me stranded in Dublin a couple of years back thanks to an aircraft going tech. 'Dont worry sir - you will get a refund' !! Yeah that helps me a lot in my current circumstances - I get my £56 back but how exactly do I cross the Irish sea and if I dont where exactly do I sleep tonight !!!

Fortunately I was able to grab a seat on Aer Lingus to get me home. Not a problem for me since I was there on business - but I feel sorry for the people who where dumped in Dublin with no way of getting home and insufficient funds to pay for an alternative !!

After that experience I have NEVER flown with them since and will not do in the future.

That said - I have flown regularly with Easyjet and BMIBaby and found them to be fine - if I encounter the same problem with them - then I am sure my attitude will change.

Richard28:

The flight was actually on a brand new (two weeks old) 737-800 but it was awful anyway, rude crew, 4 hours delay on a 2 hour flight, broken lav etc.  Smile

I recently flew FR routing NQY-STN-NQY. The airline appeared highly decent and professional, and their quick turnarounds were absolutely amazing! Go Ryanair! Big grin

Without a doubt easyjet-poor service, not that cheap, and you really do feel like 'self loading cargo' when you fly. FR beat EZY on all counts, and i love the 733. FR are the best airline based in the United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Ryanair are an Irish airline, based in the Republic of Ireland - they are not based in the United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I have flown many different UK and Ireland Airlines.

British Airways - Good
bmi british midland - Better than Good
Britannia - Excellent
Air2000 - OK
Monarch - Very Good
Ryanair - You get what you pay for
EasyJet - Likewise as above
bmibaby - Better than most LCC
Airtours/MyTravel - Awful

Basically all airlines offer you a different experience. Some good and some not so good. If you want the best always fly BA or bmi british midland and fly business class. otherwise stop all the whining

Cheers

The question being UK and Ireland (Northern Ireland being already part of the UK) my vote goes to Ryanair, with no hesitation
I prefered not to make a trip report on my last experience.
But here are a few facts.
1) the new seats on the latest 737-800 do not recline at all.
2) why do they ask you to stand and line up for boarding, while the plane is not even arrived....
3) delay (over 1hour)
4) time to get a belt number and finally the luggage at STN(with Buzz, I never had to wait for my luggage in STN)
5) a few safety issues regarding the boarding.(In STN, to make sure you will not walk under the wing, they make you walk on a heavy traffic road, with no supervision. In DUB, it is the opposite: you walk under the wings.)
And I can add more, but prefer to stop

Its hard to put them all together so I seperated them into Scheduled, Low Cost and Charter.

From best to worst:

Scheduled
1)British Airways
2)Virgin Atlantic
3)British Midland

Charter
1)Monarch
2)Air 2000
3)Thomas Cook
4)MyTravel
5)Britannia

Low Cost
1)MyTravelLite
2)FlyBe
3)EasyJet
4)Ryanair

I agree with BDRules. After just coming back from Gran Canaria, MyTravel are by far the worst airline I have had the misfortune to fly with.

Surly, miserable looking FA's who snapped at passengers.
Tatty, scruffy interiors of aircraft (together with our return aircraft being just as scruffy on the outside)
Inadequate legroom (even for me at just 5' 8")
Delayed return flight due to technical difficulties.
They sent my luggage to LGW rather than LBA (the same thing happenned to two other passengers on my flight).

Even the Servisair rep who attended to us at LBA to register our lost luggage confirmed that they are by far the worst airline they have had to deal with at LBA this summer. I can confirm that the bad press MyTravel receive is justified!
Like a fine wine, one gets better with age.

Every airline is going to have technical interruptions now and then. Remember the Concorde pax who were recently stranded in Wales and had to be BUSED to London? After paying thousands of dollars for a supersonic flight I'm sure they weren't pleased to be riding on a BUS. Seems that BA could/should have flown them to London.

Another silly topic .... in my opinion you get what you pay for, Ryanair in my opinion are a nice little airline and on the CWL-DUB routes FA's were very friendly, i've flown FR 6 times and 4 of those i've been allowed into the cockpit for a pic ...

FR are cheap, friendly, punctual, clean, have a huge network (plenty to choose from), have great special offers, upgrading their fleet, good customer service.
True some other airlines may have good points, but they often have bad points, for example;
Eastern Airways and Highland Airways -VERY expensive
EasyJet-Treat you like dirt
LoganAir-good, but unpunctual - i use them a lot and they really are poor

767Lover - no problem with the aircraft going tech - it happens to all airlines at some point. However at least the BA passengers got a bus, last time I had a BA aircraft go tech they rebooked me on SAA (LHR>Jo'burg) I decided to go out the next day instead and they upgraded me to first from club. Ryanair simply said you will get your money back - how you get home isn't our problem anymore.

Yes, I know. I was talking about how BA opted to use buses instead of either flying their own planes or chartering a plane to carry their stranded pax who had paid a VERY dear price for their ticket (as opposed to a LCC ticket.)

I copied your post to highlight that sloppiness occurs at airlines no matter how cheap or expensive they are.

I presume BA laid on a bus because they have no aircraft based a CWL (except those up on bricks having their engines done), and it was presumable quicker to put the pax on a bus, than to schedule a backup aircraft/crew from LHR/LGW, get it to CWL, turn it round, load it up and fly the pax to LHR. Its only a couple of hours on the M4, after all.
