Will NW Bring DC-10 Back To MCO?

Tue Oct 14, 2003 3:30 am

Now that the A330s are taking over some of the DC-10-30 routes, aren't the DC-10-30s going to be going domestic, or are they retiring a DC-10 as the A330 comes in?

I was wondering if NW would be flying the DC-10 to CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO from DTW or MSP during the winter months.

In recent months all of the other big 6 have been flying in widebodies to CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO except NW whose largest plane has been the 757-300.

AA was flying the A300 from MIA and SJU last spring and summer
CO was flying the 764 from IAH and EWR and the 762 from EWR with an occassional 772 sub.
DL flies in everything widebody they have
UA flew the 763 once a week from ORD last month
USAir flies the 762 from PHL and CLT daily.

Yesterday morning, as I was boarding my NW flight from MSP-BDL, a DC-9-30, I saw a DC-10 parked at the next gate. I wandered over and the departure board at the gate said Orlando, but there was no activity, so that may not be an accurate indicator. Maybe it was just parked there for the night.

I'm guessing the only way that MCO will see the DC-10 again will be a rare substitution. All the flights are B757s and smaller. The DC-10s are now only scheduled for trans-Atlantic and Hawaii services.

Incorrect. DC-10s are still serving SFO-NRT.

I would expect the 753 to serve MCO, as it was the slated replacement frame for domestic DC-10 flying.

Eventually, the DC-10 fleet will only be doing the Hawaii hauls (correct me if I'm wrong) with the 330s doing all international DC-10 traffic.

I believe I even read somewhere that NW is considering the 777 as a 742 replacement.

Does anyone know if NW will fly the 753 from DTW to MCO this winter?

it's not entirely impossible that NW might put some of those newer DC10-30s in service between DTW/MSP and SFO/LAX/SEA and then onto the beach...

Where did you read this about the 777? NW is always "looking" at the 777. They've been "looking at the 777" ever since it's introduction. Highly unlikely at this point in time.

MCO gets 1 or 2 757-300's a day.....one arriving around 11:20am. I miss seeing the -10 here....thank god for FedEx! Big grin

I would think that as the A330's come in NW would rather retire the 10's than keep them around on domestic routes. Use the 2-pilot/crew 753's or 752's than the 3-pilot/crew DC-10's.

Don't look for DC10 on any domestic, save for extreme circumstances. The 757-300 flies heavily on that route and is the replacement for the DC10.

I can see NW getting A330-200's for their longer haul routes like SEA-AMS. Does anyone know if NW is still slated to get A340's?

They currently are flying the 753 between DTW and MCO once or twice a day and there are a couple from MSP too

I just got my airline tickets to go see my family in Detroit and i found a really cheap fair on NW right before christmas and the flight is a 753- Flight 429

Don't look for DC10 on any domestic, save for extreme circumstances. The 757-300 flies heavily on that route and is the replacement for the DC10.

Given Richard Anderson's announcement that the B742 will be retired "soon" & NW's earlier decision to spread the A330 deliveries over two additional years, it won't be feasible to outright retire the DC-10 for several more years. The long-term plan always has been to configure about half of them into a high-density domestic configuration & fly them on high-capacity routes. There was a big capacity gap between the B752 and DC-10-40/Domestic (about 100 seats) and the B753 filled it nicely. However, there's many routes that NW flies that demand additional capacity + cargo (like MSP-ANC). I think we'll see NW stick to its original plan and convert about half the DC-10s into domestic birds...

They were never "slated" to get A340s.

NW ordered 24 A340 - the order was cancelled in the early 1990s.
