Why Does Everyone Love The DC-10?

Tue Oct 14, 2003 8:48 am

OK, I've noticed that a lot of you guys love the DC-10. I'm curious as to why. What is it about the old bird that you guys love so much?

Me personally, I can't stand it. I think it's an old, uncomfortable, ugly monstrosity; but that's just me. I much prefer a 767 over a DC-10 anyday. But that's just my 2 cents. What about you guys?

Wasn't the comfort of flights ive been on tho.

Only flew on a DC 10 once, AA HNL-ORD back in 2000. Although it was a little tight, it was a pretty good flight. It's such a beautiful aircraft to look at.

For me, it's because it was one of the first planes I was on as a kid that I actually remembered. Must have been about 11 years old and it was on National Airlines, MIA-EWR. I was thrilled at all the space inside. To a little kid, it seemed HUGE!

As an adult, I still admire the D10s unique look - always liked it more than the 1011. But that's just me!

Well N62NA, I guess maybe you're right. I'd forgotten about this, but I think a DC-10 was my first aircraft as well. (I flew as a baby, but that of course doesn't count.)

My first flights that I remember was SEA-ORD-SEA in 1990 (I was 8), on UA DC-10's. So I guess that does bump it up a little bit on my list. But it's still so dated, especially the NW's. I really wish NW would replace them.

The DC-10 was the first widedbody I flew, it was a Western Airlines DC-10-10 out of Mexico City back in '79. For me what makes it a beautiful machine is the raw power you felt on it, specially at take-off. Those GE engines really kicked butt and I loved that old rumbling sound. Over the years I flew on the '15 and '30 on various airlines. One memorable time was a 1 min 10 sec TO run in Rio on a hot, humid day on a CO DC-10. A non-rev flight attendant next to me mumbled a curt "boy, this plane is heavy" when we finally lifted off.
I for one am sad they've been retired almost everywhere in North America. It is a great bird.

The size, the look, the engine in the tail....any cool aviation enthousist loves the old tri-jets. Me personally i have a lot of memorys going to work with my dad back at DFW in the AA hangers that brings be back to the DC-10. I fell asleep in the cockpit of those things so many times its not funny (my dad worked at night and while the guys worked on the planes i would spend HOURS in the cockpit) the DC-10 was my favorite because it had more nobs, switches and gauges then any other aircraft in there fleet at the time. Its been about 8 years since the last time i went to work with him and i wish i could go with him here at ORD but the damn terrorist ruined that for me.

The DC-10 is noisey and powerful too, that is another reason why i like it. Most of it is beauty....VERY sexy aircraft.

The DC-10 has a special place in my heart. I have flown on AA, UA, and NW DC-10's. I just love that "old time" feel to them and that whine coming from the CF6 engines (except the -40 which is PW powered). I think it is one of th emost attractive birds in the sky from an exterior point of view. That big tail engine just looks awesome mounted up there. Not to mention that thing just takes off like an old mother goose in the worst of winds and weather. Sturdy, and reliable. What more can one ask for?

I personally prefer the L1011... But, that's just me. I suspect the reason many aviation enthusiasts like (or love) the DC-10 series is because of it's handsome lines. It's a very photogenic aircraft, in my opinion. Don't think I've seena bad picture of one, yet... although, with so many in the database, I doubt I'll see them all :-]
As a side note - Some aquaintances of mine who have flown on several, several types of airplanes said their favorite ride was in an MD11. It too is a looker. I assume those who really like the DC10 will also have a similar fondness for the MD11.

Fantastic plane, all tri-jets are a bit special me thinks!

I dont fly on it though, as a) it deos not fly on the routes I fly, and b) even if it did, its an old bird, and I fly where there are PTV's and gizmo's!

would love to fly on it again though having said that...........

I've never written that I love it, but I do. I'm coming out. I love the DC-10. Probably cause, like many others, it was the first airliner I'd flown. You always have a special place in your heart for your first - car, plane, girl. I flew a National Airlines DC-10 from MSY to MCO via Tampa, to go to DISNEY WORLD back around 1978 when I was 9. It was pretty empty and the stewardess took me to the cockpit. But I liked the DC-10 even before that flight. My room walls were covered with airliner photos. And I like it better than the L-1011 too. I got to fly one of the last AA DC-10s back in October 2000 from DFW to HNL and back.

I don't think the DC-10 looks that dated. The 707 - now that looks old. But I admit, I'm not a big Boeing or Douglas lover, but all their planes look good to me. The 727, 747, DC-10 are all unique looking planes. The A340 does nothing for me - but that is mainly due to the engines. Anyway, before my tangent goes too far....

Awspicious:

You are right, the MD11 is a looker. But there is something about that shorter look of the DC-10 that I prefer. As of being on board, it feels almost the same, but I'm wary about the smaller rudder authority on the MD11. Hong Kong and EWR come to mind...

I loved the DC-10 as it was the first plane that I flew on ever (Air Florida) and also when I started my career as a flight attendant it was the only plane that I flew for the first 2 years.......I'll never forget the takeoffs out of LGA...building the engines up whilst the brakes were on and the sudden "launch" as they were released!!  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

I only flew on the DC-10 once- in July 1999 with AA from HNL-LAX. I love the DC-10 because it is a real looker. I have a soft spot for tri-jets and the DC-10 in certain liveries such as AA looks downright sexy  Smile I especially love the front-on shots of the DC-10 when you are looking straight into that tail engine.

Do I love DC-10's? Not really. I don't know they're just not as sexy as a 747. (I guess people on these forums are the only ones that would call a plane sexy.) But, It's an awesome plane, at least to me. Has taken my more places than I could have imagined and let me see a lot more than some kid growing up in a corn field in Illinois would usually see. Besides, the tail-mounted engine just makes it look pretty bad ass.

I've only been on one CO EWR-CO / KMCO), USA - Florida">MCO but man CO but a lot of work into those DC-10's. Those were great on CO. Trust me, they are great to look at, but most are old as hell. NW's DC-10 from pictures do not look to appetizing, but there was a forum going about how great they are.

For one, I LOVE the good old DC-10. My first flight in one was in 1997 in a NW one. Since then, I have flown four more times on it , all NW. I have had nothing but good flights with them and have to say their power is amazing. Nothing beats the acceleration on take off coupled with that classic CF6 buzzsaw noise.
I also love the DC-10 for its looks. I will always think of it as the classic three-holer. For some reason it has the best looking nose in my opinion, and the humungous flaps (I think they extend 50 degrees) look really awesome at full deployment.
I hope that I'll have a chance to fly one again in the near future before NW decides to retire them all. I'd love to see them in the new livery as well. I guess I should get off my soapbox now...

Though it is not my favorite airplane, I do like the DC-10. I have flown in DC-10s of United (-10), Trans International (-30CF), Laker (-10), and Air Florida (-30CF). They are the quietest planes I ever flew in, with the exception of my one flight on a Schweitzer glider. Even with ten-abreast seating, they were exceptionally comfortable aircraft. Two special DC-10s I flew on 20 years ago still grace the skies: Laker's Southern Belle, which is now the Orbis plane, and Air Florida's 1035F, flying with Fed Ex as Alison. Two fine ladies, as dignified as ever.

Not too great if you're in the dreaded middle middle seat in the 5-row in coach! I think it's the only airliner that has this, no?  Confused

Because it is a TriJet . . .
Because it has great proportions . . .
Because it was very roomy compared to airliners of that vintage . . .
Because it takes off like a rocket . . .
Because it looks so good from just about every angle . . .
Perhaps also because it was one of those airliners that suffered so much from media paranoia (when some accidents were not linked to design shortcomings) . . .

Only regret is that the only few times I have flown on the DC-10 are those of Malaysia Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Japan Airlines (but will soon add Northwest DC-10 to the list).

It is a plane that I could never tire of photographing and ogling . . . long live the DC-10 and all wide-bodied TriJets.

Preference to looks and the fact that it was a first flight are all valid. I love the DC-10 because every flight I've been on has been perfect. Whether that was due to cabin crew, weather or my mood is irrelevant. I'll also die loving the A300 for the same reason.

Though I think the L-1011 is a far better looking aircraft, I've had good flight experiences only with DL. My TW and EA flights belong in the annals of worst flight ever. To be fair though, it was not the aircraft but the cabin crew.

Because it looks so cool. In my mind, a DC-10 will always beat a 767 or 757, or even a A-340 on looks. There is just something about having that jet sitting on top. So many aircraft these days look so similar. I know there are big differences, but basically, they are all being built as a long tube with two or four jets under the wings.

I think the DC10 is great because it is not the standard tube-with-engines-on-the-wings. The looks are different, and impressive.

I have a soft spot for the DC10 ever since 91, I was trying to get from MIA to GIG on RG, to catch an onward SAflight to JNB (there was only one per week in those days) - I was nonrevving, and flight after flight left full, finally after 2 days I got the last seat on an RG DC10 - and yes, it was the dreaded middle-of-5 seat, but I didn't care - I was so glad just to get away ! I had to sprint down the concourse at MIA, and the door nearly came down on my head as I boarded.

The way the DC10 takes off as well, it kind of rockets up into the air like a grouse - I used to watch the old QZ DC10 leaving JNB on a Friday lunchtime for LUN, it had pretty light loads, so it didn't need much runway even at JNB, and used to be very high before it hit the boundary fence. Aaaahhh..

DC10s are very cool. Yesterday I saw a Fedex MD10 at SLC and just sat and admired it for a long time.

They were they very first jet aircraft I ever flew on so they mean a lot to me too.

Not so much for looks. Personally I like the looks of the 777 or 747 a lot more, but the DC-10 has the best jumpseat window of any airplane I've ever been on and as a non-rev who often had to travel in the jumpseat to go from A to B, this is the best plane to do it  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

It's hard to believe that American Airlines used to fly the DC-10 between Detroit Metro and Buffalo. The one thing I will always remember about the D10 were those bright, quick double-blinking strobes on the wing tips. On a clear night, a DC-10 could be twenty miles away and you could recognize it by those bright strobe lights. Flew AA and UA D10's many times. I think it is one of the great aircraft of all time.

The DC-10 is a special aircraft to me as well. IMO it'll always be American Airlines flagship aircraft even tho they don't fly it anymore. If you ever seen & listen to a DC-10 take-off in a rainstorm, you'll get goosebumps hearing that chainsaw roar.  Wink/being sarcastic Regards.

On a recent flight from Osaka to Honolulu (NW 747-200) I looked down in the middle of the flight (also in the middle of the night) to see the faint outline of a JAL DC-10 about 3,000 feet below us, but traveling in the same relative direction/speed. As she hung below us, suspended in mid air as if motionless, one could see a faint red glow tracking from behind the tail engine as the 3 engined plane tore through the skies above the darkened pacific ocean below. The familiar strobe lights pulsed from the end of both wingtips, and we were close enough to see the lights from the oversized windows on the right side of the aircraft. Even in the relative sensory vacuum of a trans oceanic flight in the middle of the night, you could still feel the power of the DC-10..

Like so many others here, I love tri-jets, especially the DC10. Not sure why exactly, but the asthetics of the airplane are fabulous. That number 2 engine does it for me, because it isn't molded into the fuselage like the L-1011, it seems to stand out more.

The MD-11 is nice too, with the longer fuselage and winglets, but the DC10 has a different and such unqiue noise as it flies over, something the MD-11 doesn't have, due to engines of course. I'll always remember with fond memories of United flying the DC10 into OMA from DEN back in the day. As OMA doesn't get any scheduled "heavies", it was always nice to see that DC10 dwarf the rest of the ramp.

I flew four times on the DC-10 (DUS-JFK-DUS on LH and DUS-IBZ-DUS on DE), the flights were comfortable and I am glad that I flew on this plane but nowadays I would prefer a flight on an aircraft type which is more modern, the DC-10 is too old right now.

Can't help but like it. I think all of the "old 3 holers" have something about them.

Never flew 727 - too late now I guess
L1011 - beautiful aircraft, flew quite a few times.
DC-10 - didn't like them to start with, until I flew on one of them! Was just before the fleet retirement from UA from ORD to LAS. What struck me initially was the size. I remember walking along the airbridge, and it was uphill!
Walking into the cabin, again struck by the size of the thing.
Loved the sound of the engines, from both the outside and the inside. A bit noisier, but felt like a "real" aircraft. Seem to lift off like a rocket! Very lively performance for an "old bird."
I remember a beautifully soft landing in LAS, and the cabin crew joking over the intercom that they had to check out the window to see if we had actually landed.
