Former DL Oddball Routes

Wed Oct 15, 2003 7:36 am

I know, the weekly oddball route topic, but i am really interested in this.

DL used to fly
MIA-FLL at like 1am and during the day FLL-PBI. I know they have done 767-300ers JFK-BOS in the past as well.
I am interested in why they did MIA-FLL, FLL-PBI and if there were other routes like that that they flew? Also, how were the loads?

They flew FLL-NAS back around '98 using M88s. I think the aircraft continued to one of the NYC-area airports. Don't know how long the route was operated, however.

i happen to know the FLL-NAS flight... flt 1116 from DFW-FLL-NAS.... origionally, it started outside of Dallas, but in Texas before arriving at DFW. That is unerstandable since you can't just DRIVE to NAS!

Topic: Former DL Oddball Routes

Wed Oct 15, 2003 7:47 am

Back in the 80s and early 90s, short flights such at MIA-FLL and PBI-FLL were quite common among several carriers. They were conducted as means of aircraft placement and utilization under revenue operation. Most of the flights were direct flights such as PBI-FLL-ATL which I flew on several times (DC-8-71). Trans World also flew the JFK-BOS route using L-1011s as well as Pan Am with 747s (which is the shortest revenue 747 flight I know of except maybe the United 747 flight SAN-LAX-HNL). Trans World and Delta flew LAX-SAN using L-1011s and 767s as well. The list goes on...
In the Alaska bush I'd rather have a two hour bladder and three hours of gas than vice versa.

Portland (Maine) to Boston on 757s is one such route (no airlines even fly between these cities any more, I don't think). Boston-Hartford on L-1011s is another candidate. A third candidate might be Boston-Montreal on L-1011s and 767-300s...another route long since downgraded to RJs.

AE flew MIA PBI on a SAAB in the early 90's. That sucker went full. I know, I got bumped a few times STBY. I think it would be packed now, no one wants to sit in traffic on I95 to MIA airport to go to the west coast or down south.

IIRC, they flew that route right up to the end of Saab service in the Miami area. If they were still flying Saabs, they would probably still be flying it.

I posted this in a new topic as well, but I thought it might get more attention here:

Does anyone remember or know if DL (Connection) offered service between AMA and LBB back in the day? I am almost positive that I remember seeing a 2x or 3x daily ASA flight on an EMB-120 between these two cities. Same goes for AUS-SAT, but I find the LBB-AMA route more interesting.

If anyone knows anything about this route, please let me know!

DL offers Delta Connection on Comair and Atlantic Coast (Canadair RJ and FroJos, respectively) for this route. 4x daily.

The 767-300's from Boston to Montréal were baffling.

For a while, Delta had some short East Coast flights that were extensions of Transatlantic flights.

I loved the L15 from JFK to Dulles. It continued on to Frankfurt. I miss that flight; I miss the L15. It was such a short hop, but it was great.

They also used to have a 767-300 between Hartford and JFK, which continued on to Paris.

There was a 763 from JFK to Philadelphia for a while too.

And the odd London/Gatwick-Detroit-Cleveland flight. That never made any sense to me. Apparently it didn't make sense to Delta either. Flying an L15 or an A310 from Detroit to Cleveland was just too strange.

I remember a goofy DL route, more continuing service, but ROC-SYR (2x daily) on 727 in 1999; SDF-LEX on MD-88 and SDF-BNA (2x daily), PHL-JFK on a B763 (continuing service of a int'l flight), DL Connection PIT-BUF in 1999 - really weird.

Both SAT-AUS and AMA-LBB did once exist in the mainline Delta capacity. Some others:

OAK-RNO (one way). This was part of a red eye OAK-RNO-DFW
PHX-LAS (one way). 2 dailies at one point. They were flown with 767's
SAN-PHX
FCA-MSO Done one way as recently as summer.

ANC-HNL Probably inherited from Western
ANC-HKG This was back in the day of Kai Tak.

Up until about four years ago, Delta continued to operate a very late evening nonstop Houston-San Antonio. It did not operate in the oposite direction.

It's worth noting that the Austin-San Antonio segment was part of routings that operated AUS-SAT-SLC or vice versa.

Better than LAX-SAN was the SNA-SAN-ATL that Delta used to fly with a 757.

Boston-Hartford on L-1011s is another candidate.

The route actually was BDA-BOS-BDL.

Most of these odd-ball routes are tag on flights of yesteryear. And remember, all these flights from BOS are from when BOS was a mini hub for DL, with mainline flights all over the NE.

Examples:

BGR-PVD (and onto CVG)
PWM-ALB (and onto ATL)
DL / KBDL), USA - Connecticut">BDL-BOS (and onto BDA)
LEX-SDF (and onto DFW)
SDF-BNA (and onto ATL)
GTF-HEL (and onto SLC)

DL operated ELP-ABQ-SLC for years with a 727. It was inherited from Western and discontinued only a few years ago.

The LAX-SAN route on DL was actually:

SAN-LAX-HNL

HNL-LAX-SAN

The classic ATL-TUL-OKC-SLC which was operated on a 72S for years, now done by a 738 looks to finally discontinued in the new schedule for February. I cannot believe that it is finally gone.

I remember that PVD-BGR route...Not only did it seem strange, but the thing left around 1030-11pm....It was maybe 5-6 years ago and I had come in on a late WN flight from BWI, it was around 10. The WN gate we came off at was across from DL's gate with the BGR flight. The flight was beginning to board with maybe 15 people at the gate. I remembering saying to my mom, "Who would be flying to BGR from Providence at 1030 on a Sunday night"? She just laughed

Was this route profitable at all for DL? And was it canned pre or post 9/11?

Bosugadl:

I once flew CVG-PVD-BGR. I did that routing specifically to take the PVD-BGR flight. It was a continuation from ATL. I was one of maybee 40 people on the flight, and the only one in F.
