Air Force One Today At FAT.

Thu Oct 16, 2003 7:23 am

Hi!

When I see some of our enthusiasts in this forum talking about all those great airplanes you've seen lately in great airports I must admit that here in FAT not a lot is going on, but once a while we have those nice great moments, like today!
Now that Concorde is near the end I think the most carismatic airplane we will have from now on is no doubt Air Force One. And today he landed here in FAT. I didn't actually see it arriving but I saw it taking-off, and it was a very powerfull feeling. First of all FAT is not an airport easy to receive an airplane like Air Force One, it's really huge and here the biggest you get is the 767-200 and rarely a DC-10 ( when Fresno Bulldogs went to Louisiana ), so the plane had to be parked by the cargo area. So at least the regular FedEx 727-100 had to be moved outside. Then when the plane taxied to the runway it was blowing a huge amount of dust because those taxiways are really narrow. Then it came the take-off, once again when the plane left a big wide could of dust completely engulfed the back of the plane and for some minutes you couldn't see it - excelent ECM, the dust just hides all the plane.... - untill it poped out in the end of the runway. It was a nice moment, it's not everyday you this plane, and in a small airport like this its even better. The plane was in excelent condition, it shined in the sun, just perfect.
It landed at 10:00 am and left at 2:15 pm.

Hi!

Well the bird actually did ok! I'm sure that it didn't leave FAT with full load, it was going to another place in CA, but I tell you that dust really blew my mind.... it was almost like those C-130's that you see landing in the desert!!!
But it was fine and nice!
Thanks for the comment!

Not necessarily....

1. FAT is only 300-400 feet above sea level.
2. AF1 is not loaded down with cargo or pax.
3. It likely did not have much fuel onboard, since wherever it left FAT for, isn't even close to its maximum range.

It could easily be off in less than 7000'.

Pushing at 9200 feet? Not in the slightest. The takeoff weight af one of the VC-25s is not that much when compared to passenger 747-200s. MZJ has a mere 6500 feet available and aircraft heavier can take off there on a 110 degree day, and it is at 2800 feet altitude or so.
The day you stop learning is the day you should die.
