PSU--Most of TWA's MD80's are newer than AA
's. In fact, about 30% of TWA's -80's were the last produced. Allegedly, many of AA
's spare parts will not work on the TWA airplanes because they are "dumb". TWA's last group incorporated newer technology into many of their components.
Several of the ex-TWA airplanes in the desert have had their engines removed because an AD
had already been complied with. The engines were put on S80's while the AA
engines were modified. It is rumored that these airplanes may be coming back into service. AA
gave away its 737 slots for a couple of years after 9/11 so we can't get any new airplanes to add capacity.
As for the 757's, 11 are still flying on the TWA LLC certificate. These will go out of service by the end of November. These, I believe, were leased through ILFC and are able to be returned early. The others(17) are through Boeing and must stay through the end of the lease term. Most of those aircraft have been modified to AA
standard and are off the TWA certificate.TC
