Reus is described, on FR's website, as 'Reus (Barcelona)'.

It is very good that Europe's number one low-cost carrier is continually expanding its operation, thereby creating more choice for the all-important consumer and offering, on the whole, considerably lower prices. In addition, the new route, which will result in 200 additional people being employed, will aid the development of Reus' local economy.

Reus is about 110 km from Barcelona, and 250 km from Valencia.
It has a quite small airport, when I was there two years ago there was only one daily regular flight (to MAD). Most traffic was charter, from UK & Germany sending people to the "Costa Daurada" beach spots (Salou, Cambrils, Port Aventura, etc). A bit run down place, no public transport available (except probably a bus to the center of the town). Not really practical airport for Barcelonians, and out of the question for Valencians...

Reus in the middle of nowhere ?

Well it all depends ! If your final destination is Barcelona, BCN is certainly more convenient (BCN is fine also for resorts like Castelldefels and Sitges). But for holidays resorts of the Costa Dorada (Salou, Cambrils,...) and Tarragona, I'd say Reus is right in the middle of the action.

Exactly the same way, I find Girona (GRO, also FR destination) much more conveniently located than BCN for all the resorts of the Costa Brava (been there several times) : Roses, Ampuriabrava, L'Escala, L'Estartit, Platja d'Aro, Lloret de Mar and many more...

FR would actually be more honest if they advertised Reus and GRO as being Reus and GRO (not Barcelona) but that's their usual strategy and I certainly don't want to start a FR bashing series. GRO and Reus are great destinations by themselves !

The problem with Reus is the lack of public transportation (as the airport is mainly used by charters, with tour-operators having their own coaches).

Probably the arrival of FR will generate a new coach link between the airport and (possibly) Barcelona. That's the way it happened at some other "Ryanairports".

By the way, german LCC Hapag-Lloyd Express (X3) operates scheduled routes between Reus and Germany (HAJ and CGN).

I agree with BrusselsSouth, Ryanair should have advertised this route not with the Barcelona name. It is not a bad idea to set up this flight, as there are a number of cities - Tarragona, Reus, Valls - very close, we are talking about of a population base of more than 500K people living less than 20 km from Reus airport. This, coupled with the beach spots, probably justifies a regular London flight.

I flew with FH MME-REU-MME a few years ago. The airport is tiny - so small I couldn't believe it Laugh out loud What you see in that photo above is all that's there! Only spent 20 minutes in the airport going back to MME, very fast!

I went on a holiday to Salou.. it's a nice place and wasn't too far away from the airport. I'd consider using this flight to go to Salou again, great place  Big thumbs up

Suprised that REU is so small, considerong its the gateway to a major Costa destination for European sunseekers. I have never been but imagined it would be along the lines of IBZ or MAH.

I am sure Ryanair will ensure rapid expansion of this airport.

Great post BrusselsSouth!

It is a pity that they call it Barcelona as it is very misleading - I think that it should be called Reus-Tarragona. As has been stated by several people on this post, the area is indeed a major cultural and tourist region its own rights and doesn't need the BCN moniker.

FYI, Tarragona was once the "capital" of roman Spain, and interestingly is still the ecclesiatical "capital". Lot's of great roman ruins in the area. Also, one of Spain's answers to Eurodisney is nearby.

The year after I got my PPL I flew from Zurich to Ibiza in a C152 with a friend of mine (a very trusting non-pilot!). THe way there was fine, we stopped in Lyon-Bron, Perpignan, Gerona and Valencia. On the way back we flew from Ibiza to Castellon de la Plana. We refuelled and headed North to Gerona. As we got further north the weather got really bad, the cloud got lower and it started raining. We were approaching Reus and put down there. They were most unhappy about it and basically told me I should leave and follow the highway at 300 feet. As a brand new pilot I figured these guys knew what they were doing, so off we set. Well, the weather got no better, it was real cloudy and the rain got heavier. We saw a flash of lightning and I decided that was it , did a 180 and went back to Reus. Gave the people in the "C" office sh*t and caught a taxi into Tarragona.

Glad we did because the next day was absolute CAVOK.

My impression of Reus: a bit of a dump and not very good ground support. Although I'm sure that an airline will get better service than a PPL in a C152!!  Smile
