SIA Unveils New Executive Economy Class!Impressing

Fri Oct 17, 2003 5:05 am

Just found an interesting article on www.airlinequality.com about SIA's 345..A summary:

-SQ 345 will be introduced february 2004 on the SIN-LAX route and this will be actually the longest offered non-stop commercial service in the world(SIN-LAX will take 16 hours and LAX-SIN will take 18.5 hours)
-In July 2004 SIN-NYC the next route operated by SQ 345, will begin.
-Especially to ensure comfort and service on this flight, the 345 will feature just 181 seats, in a two class configuration(raffles class and the new executive economy class)

-About the new Executive Economy Class:
1. a 2-3-2 configuration offering 117 seats
2. seat pitch is 37", seat-back incline 8", seat width 20",a leather adjustable headrest, an innovative leg rest and foot rest, and a 9" personal video monitor for in-flight entertainment.

-About the Raffles Class:
1. a 2-2-2 configuration offering 64 seats
2. seats will be ofcourse the new SpaceBeds

-Another features:
1. passenger corners in both Raffles and E-E class.
2. Executive Economy Class will offer an area where customers can help themselves to an array of snacks and drinks.
3. latest AVOD Matsushita system

Really looks SIA is to set again a new standard in the world of civil aviation!

Does this mean that their flights 11 and 12 will be no more? No more LAX-NRT-Singapore or is this just an addition that's gonna be great? Just wondering...

I think several airlines offer a class between economy and business. However, the only one that comes to mind is EVA's Evergreen Deluxe.

It is nice to see another carrier add this class. I have found that any extra room on a trans Pacific flight is great!

Wonder what the array of snacks are? I have not seen that in my travels.

The econmy product looks exactly like the economy plus product I saw on SAS 340-300 CPH-NAR. So much for `new`. Is it also the same Recaro seat ?

The fact that there is no cattle class left is new.(but probably neccesary, you can´t expect anybody to sit in a cramped seat for 16-17 hours..DVT etc..)

Keesje,

This might sold as a new product, but I think there is an operational must.

less pax = less weight = less fuel consumption = greater range with same fuel

Virgin and BA already offer an Economy Plus cabin - but as 744 rules mentions - perhaps operational limits may be an important factor here.

Ofcourse there are much airlines which provides Economy Extra or whatever..United, SAS, BA, VS, Eva air etc..but SIA is the first to operate only E-E and C-class, with no Y class. Just 181 seats in a 345 must be quite spacious and ofcourse that's necessary for such long flights

The reason for SIA to configure A345 that way is that A345 does not have the range to fly such route with traditional setup.

This product was introduced due to design of aircraft not so called advance in product offering by SIA.

Do you think anyone would fly 18 hours in a standard Y seat?

I would, if it was much cheaper than the Executive Economy fare! All the better if it's a 777, with IFE, and top-rated cabin service like MH, CX, SQ.....

SQ's concept is nothing new, after all, VS had their Premium Economy. What's new about it, though, is that there's more space sideways in addition to legroom. But then, come to think of it, that may not be a new idea altogether - I recently read somewhere on the Forum where someone said in the early 70s, when fuel was much cheaper, some L1011s had 2-4-2 seating instead of 2-5-2.

Looks like SQ is targetting the upper end of the market as usual, and this time, it's the upper segment of Economy Class. But they'll have to charge a whole lot more than usual for obvious reasons.

It'll be 2 firsts for them - first Airbus with 2-3-2, and 1st non-stop from Southeast Asia to the West Coast. That'll give them a lot of publicity capital. in that sense, they'll be setting a new standard, but not everyone should follow suit: remember, it's about which segment of the market you're targetting.

That also makes me wonder: could the Exec. Econ. Class end up attracting those who would otherwise have gone for Business Class?

Yeah. For a cheap fare, folks would travel standing up in the lavatory if they had to. They would of course complain about the lack of PTVs, smiling FAs, etc etc etc. But they'd fly all the same.

It is interesting to note the info on SQ website, that the seat width of Raffles Class SpaceBed and Executive Economy Seat is the same at 20".

As far as I'm concerned, the seat width of the SPACEBED is actually 22" because it is 22" (0.5" wider than Hong Kong's de facto flag carrier's New Business Class)

Would it be possible that the SpaceBeds on A345 is longer but narrower?
After all, the configuration on the A345 is 2-2-2 as with the B772ER, while the cabin of the B772ER is much wider.

Could be, I've given The Airline feedback for my enquiry and the Customer Relations department will revert to me. It shouldn't be narrower as when it's a bed it's 27" wide anyway like on the MEGATOP and JUBILEE ER
