Turkish Airlines A340 Makes Emergency Landing

Sun Jan 02, 2000 2:23 am

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - A Turkish Airlines plane headed for South Africa was forced to return to Istanbul's airport Saturday after colliding with a flock of seagulls, knocking out two of the plane's four engines, the Anatolia news agency said.

The Airbus 340 hit the birds shortly after takeoff early Saturday. The plane's radar was also damaged. The plane turned around over the sea and landed at Ataturk airport.

The passengers were unharmed and left for Cape Town on a different plane, Anatolia said.

A heavy A340 on two engines?! They're bad enough flying on all four just after takeoff! I'm glad I wasn't at the controls of that one!

CX-Boy...it seems you don't know much about Airbus
and aviation in general. It seems you ignore that an
A340 can be flown on two reactors like a B747 in the
same emergency situation...please leave it alone with
these eternal and very boring "Anti-Airbus" or such "Airbus Vs Boeing" posts....

Dear TCA,

"....it seems you don't know much about Airbus and aviation in general."
You shouldn't take me too seriously when I say the A340 doesn't climb on two engines. I am rather toungue-in-cheek when I say that. I happen to fly the things for Cathay for a living, so I'd like to think I know a little about aviation and Airbus!
I am not at all anti-airbus. I like the A340 very much, and I don't often bash it. It is a very sleek aircraft. The only thing I don't really like it is the performance. When ATC give demanding climb requirements, our fully loaded 340s often cannot comply. We also get stick from the Boeing guys telling us that we hold them up. Doesn't matter though, airbus make nice aircraft and I'd rather being in a 340 than a lot of other rust buckets around the sky!

I love the Airbus vs Boeing discussions!

In fact I love the fantastic success of Airbus these last years, and for the years to come...

How many sales mgrs will Boeing fire before understanding that the wrong thing is the family policy: All jets are different in cabin and cockpit!!!!! Good for us spotters but not if you have to buy a new airliner.
