NW DC10 Update....

Sat Oct 18, 2003 5:42 am

It is official that NW will keep all 22 DC10 in service until September 2004. From that point changes may start to occur. The DTW base closure for DC10 pilots will be moved up to around June 04 and with that the HNL pilot base will open around same time.

Also,
The newest 747-400 NW has is currently getting the new World Business Class seats installed and it is also getting painted with the new livery. By the end of the year 4 more 747-400 will be painted with the new livery totaling 6 of 16 with the new paint.

Will the 744 also get the new economy class seating, and PTVs?

Do you know at what rate the 744s will be refitted with the new WBC?

So we should see more services added since the A330-300s won't be going nowhere.... unless they are replacing the 742?

I hope they put some of the DC-10s back on domestic since the A330s are coming in. I would love to start seeing them at MCO, like they did before I moved here.

The A330 orders are one for one with the DC-10..CORRECT???

If they are one for one with the DC-10 dont expect any new domestic DC-10 flying, unless schedulers are going to start to get a bit creative with routes and aircraft swaps!

The A330 order was orginally intended to be one-for-one, however NW is tweaking its fleet plan in order to reduce costs and match capacity to demand.

The initial order was for 24 298 seat A330-300's to replace the DC-10-30's on for one. Later that order converted 10 of the -300's into ~250 seat -200's.

Keep in mind the DC-10-30 seats 273. With the retirement of the 742's the top priority, DC-10-30's that have been pulled off the Trans-Atlantic due to the arrival of the A330 have been put on some Trans-Pacific routes that used to be 742's for example SFO-NRT, and I believe one of the HNL-NRT or something like that. There are still a significant number of DC-10's on Trans-Atlantic, and the Trans-Pac's require more aircraft per route. Plus Hawaii flights will remain DC-10 for the future. So the A330 is not necessarily replacing the DC-10 one-for-one for the time being.

The 744's are not scheduled to have the new economy PTV's at this time. However, the company is looking around for the best price in case they decide to incorporate this on the next round of major checks.

if they keep these around for a while yet, will we see any DC-10s domestically again? Like MSP-SEA?

NW always intended to retain a large portion of their DC-10-30 fleet (again, mostly the newer aircraft built in the 1980s) into the distant future. These aircraft will receive a high-density configuration (most likely a cheap overhaul of only the WBC -- e.g. the removal of PTV, leg rests & addition of one or two rows, etc. -- a la DC-10-40 circa 2000) as well the new c/s. Likely routes will include DTW-HNL (seasonal), 2xMSP-HNL, SEA-HNL, SEA-OGG, HNL-NRT, SPN-NRT, GUM-NRT and MSP-ANC. I wouldn't be surprised if a few select high-density domestic routes (e.g. early-morning MSP-SEA, select flights between DTW/MSP, etc.) receive the DC-10 as well.

Like I've written before, as DTW's European bank of flights matures, we may see SEA/LAX/SFO - DTW A330 service to connect with the European flights in order to provide West Coast consumers WBC throughout the length of their journey.

That's bad news. That means when I arrive at DTW late at night from the MSP SuperHub (you know -- when the tram's shut off and your flight arrives at the furthest gate), I won't see a DC-10 (usually going to AMS) crapped out at the gate... I'll miss the expressions on the those angry passengers  Sad. Memories...

Don't worry, IP you'll just have to hope that the late-night DC-10 to CDG is still there crapped out at the gate, or if you're lucky the morning HNL flight is still there. You gotta love the 11:30pm arrivals coming into A74.

Did NW ever take the DC-10 off the MSP-SEA route? I flew from SEA-MSP-SEA in the summer of 2002, and I was on a 752 on the outbound, and a DC-10 on the return. So as far as I know, the DC-10 is still flying that route. However, I could very well be wrong. lol. Hope it helps.  Smile

NW DC-10s are stilled used on the HNL routes I WISH they would use the A330.

IF A330 aircraft are flown to Hawaii in the near future, it won't be until after the DC-10s have been replaced across the Atlantic...

Not really related to the DC 10 but why would Northwest be taking delivery of 3305 this month, the fifth 330 in 3 months and not another one for 5 months? Where can you find out the scheduled delivery dates?

A few months ago, NW modified the A330 order so that the aircraft will be spread for delivery via 2008 instead of mid-2005. It's likely that the 5 A330 delivered via the end of the year couldn't be spread out when NW made the change... and it's likely NW wanted a modest number of aircraft instantly. 5 A330 is enough to clean house (dump the DC-10) at DTW.

with the high loads b/t MSP-SEA I'm surprised they dont have scheduled DC-10 service b/t the two cities. There's nothing better than flying a widebody domestically!! Especially for those who just want to do a quick lunch date in SEA with a friend.

NW flew B747 between MSP and SEA via the late 1990s...

Favre - with the first 3 going to AMS, the 4th to FRA, can we assume the 5th will go to LGW when ready for service? Or will it go to CDG?

It'll go to LGW for sure since Richard Anderson said NW wanted to have a compeitive product againt BA/LH ... BA upgrades DTW-LHR to the B777 next week.

For those people who love flying wide bodies domestically, I flew one MSP to SFO about a month ago. Granted it was supposed to be a 753. It was off to NRT after our flight. Made it nice. Was supposed to have about 5 seats open instead had about 100. Nice having room to stretch.

NW sometimes subsitutes DC-10 and B747 aircraft on flights from MSP/DTW to LAX/SFO/SEA ... sometimes, during peak travel dates, a DC-10 will fly MSP/DTW-MCO...

In '98 flew MSP MKE in the DC 10-40. It was a great flight.
