Abnormal Landings?

Sat Oct 18, 2003 7:16 am

I would like to know if anyone out there has experienced extreme or should i say "abnormal" landings? I personally have only experienced one when i was 10 yrs old. As many of you might know, Tegucigalpa's Toncontin International airport in Honduras has a very challenging approach, mainly due to the mountains sorrounding it, and its short runway. American Airlines flies a 757 to TGU from MIA, and the incident i am referring to consisted of the aircraft landing way too far past the threshold resulting in a touch and go situation, followed by a steep 180 degree turn to the left in order to re-attempt. The second time was successful, but still very frightening.

Any other experiences??

Here is a picture of the runway at TGU. Notice the beautiful livery of SAHSA's 732. SAHSA was Honduras' main carrier up until the early 90s when it filed for bankruptcy.

Not necessarily an abnormal landing, but I remember landing at JFK some time ago in the AY's MD-11. When just above the runway, the plane was in a very hard left bank, seemed like it was going to touch the runway with its left wing. Well, it didn't, but it surely didn't land right either. After hitting the runway with its left main gear, it jumped up and then came back down on its right main gear, which didn't help to land either. The plane then went up again and then it came down again, for the third time. Only this time it was finally even and we landed. Needless to say, everyone applauded with great enthusiasm  Smile

Had a very similar experiance as Levg79 . But I was actually on a 763 and the plane was landing @ Pearson R33. The plane banked to the right and hit the ground hard. This was the result of a strong crosswind.

I've been in one go-around (at PHL, 1999, when another plane landed on the intersecting runway just a little too slowly) and two or three nasty bounce-in or slam-dunks (the worst was on Piedmont about 1988.)
