Meigs Field, Now

Sat Oct 18, 2003 11:04 am

Since that moronic jackass Daley had Meigs ripped to shreads as he did, and the AOPA fighting to do somthing about it, I am curious..

1.) What is the current apperance of Meigs? Any newer air-to-ground shots??

2.) What is the status of the AOPA's fight?

3.) Who, in your eyes, has first rights to beat the hell out of Daley for what he did??

Chris

(Edited to change ALPA to AOPA..Thanks JAL777)

ALPA?

I think you mean the AOPA. Why would ALPA get involved? It's not their realm.

The Meigs fight seems all but dead. AOPA tried fighting it in court and lost. Last I heard it was just sitting there. I flew in there one month before it happened in a 172. I am so glad I did now. http://www.aopa.org should have more info

AOPA dropped their legal claims, as the judge warned that if they lost, AOPA would have to pay Chicago's legal fees and he (the judge) said the chances of AOPA winning were nonexistent...  Sad

i dont know whats left of the runway, the x's might still be there im not 100% on that. Also in Chicago, as much as it hurts, its not really called Meigs Field anymore...its called Northerly Island.

This is something I've not expressed too many times, but god bless Mayor Daley!

If you will remember correctly, the city of Chicago adopted the plans drawn up by Daniel Burnham long ago which called for the entire lakefront area to be made accessible to the PEOPLE in the form of public parks and the like (a small airstrip allowing suburbanites to commute via cessna definitely was not on the drawing board). Of course, Daley did agree with the State of Illinois that the airstrip would be turned over to the city to be turned into said park in 2007, I believe, but then again, never underestimate the power of the great Chicago Democratic political machine. Ah, the very same people which seem to be lamenting the death of concorde are all up in a furore over the loss of Meigs, but then how democratic is either? i digress...... thank you for your time

NCL, it's not the closure of Meigs per se but the way in which it happened.
Also, the closure of Meigs goes against several agreements reached between the city of Chicago, the state of Illinois and the federal government (plus FAA and AOPA) about aviation in the area.

The eventual demise of Meigs was inevitable, the ground is just too easy to sell for office blocks (noone in his right mind believes it will become a park or remain so for long if it does).

Northerly Island will be a park. I guarantee it. Daley loves parks and flowers and he desperately wants to have a park on the site where Meigs Field is/was.

As for Burnham's lakefront idea and plan, the grand bulk of his dream has been realized and maintained. The two primary exceptions are McCormick Place and the new Soldier Field, both of which are unfortunate aberrations to the idea of lakefront parks along the shoreline between the city limits.

I miss CGX and wish I had flown into or out of it. But the city will make a delightful park there and I'm looking forward to using it myself.

I give it a few months before the new "PARK" becomes a zoo. Those of you who live in the Chicago area know what I mean.

Yeah I hear ya. Just take a look at Chicago's other parks. If one didn't know better, he would think he was visiting the Primate Exhibit at Lincoln Park Zoo....

Last I checked this was the United States. We are in a democracy. How is it then that the evil dictator of Chicago can order this airport destroyed?

I have flown into this airport myself. It was a great flight from Toledo to Meigs. You could get downtown fast, have some dinner. Spend some of your money in the windy city and be back home in all in a short time. But the evil dictator took that away from us. I guess he doesn't really want people to spend their money in Chicago.

If I'm not mistaken, Isn't the whole south shoreline of Chicago already some sort of park?

I'm putting my money where my mouth is and have been refusing to spend money in Chicago in any way, shape, or form. Hope the rest of the pro-Meigs crowd is doing the same...

Funny, didn't know they had monkeys at the other Chicago Parks. Or is that some sort of hidden racial slur?

Yeah what if they had the airport and a park, what will you do then?

FAR's 157.3 and 157.5 require 90 days notice before deactivating an airport or commencing any work on the takeoff areas. AOPA requested and got a Part 157 complaint investigation into Daley's actions, but as of August the complaint was languishing in the FAA legal department.

AOPA tried to get language inserted into the FAA Reauthorization Bill to fine airport sponsors $10,000 a day for a closure without the proper notice.

The rules are in place to prevent this from happening, but rules without enforcement are useless.
