Good NEWS!Re: The Hill @ LAX

Sat Oct 18, 2003 12:56 pm

Zoomed by 'the Hill' near LAX this afternoon...and boy! What a kick ass job they did! For a city (El Segundo) who hates LAX and it's nice (and completely incongruent given the relationship between the two communities). They built what is arguably the nicest vantage point to watch planes! This is gonna be swarming with spotters. Where the shrubbery was - lining the sidewalks-- is now a very long 3-4 ft high fence (I guess a liability thing to keep the late-nite drunks (and non plane spotters/photogs) from rolling down the hill and into the middle of busy Imperial Highway. Along the fence are nice new wrought-iron bench/seats jsut make plane spotting all the more comfortable. At the center an semi circular like veranda or perch at the hill's highest point! They also added those 'fast food' like chair/table set-ups. Kinda like at McDonalds where you have a chair small table and an opposing chair facing. So two people can either sit their grub or camera equipment down while watching the action. All the trees are gone, so there's nothing getting in your way. Oh and also the occasional gift from seagulls and pigeons are elimated to sans the trees!

Just in time too, with the winter sun at your back, everything is lit favorably! On your next visit, you're gonna like it!

I live on the other side of the US, but I have been to this spot before. Aren't there apartments right behind this point with the same view?. I think that would be a awesome place to live.

Ur welcome 777 man.

They sure are FlyPIJets, but I get the feeling that 'most' of those residents don't appreaciate those views like we do. I'm sure most of them want the airport to 'go away' or not expand...although the airport was there eons before they were! It's not like they moved there....and discovered LAX after the moving van drove off!

But the bad news is....... I heard that unless you have a 400 or 500 mm lens forget it; you are too far away from the action on the hill. is that right?

Greetings to all fellow airplane spotters. I too am very happy to see that the El Segundo vantage point has been rebuilt with the aviation enthusiast in mind. However, I am very disappointed that the roadway on the north side of the airport remains closed off. You could literally get within feet of landing aircraft on runway 24R I understand that it was done for security reasons but truth-be-told the entire airport perimeter is at risk. Does anyone know if it is still possible to park elsewhere and walk to that north complex vantage point? It is the roadway leading from Westchester Parkway to Lincoln Blvd, about half way down runway 24R.

Hats off to In N' Out Burger for expanding their outdoor seating too. Talk about a security risk! You can almost reach out and touch those 747s!

Bruce,

A 200mm lens is good for heavy aircraft, but you need a 300 or 400mm lens for smaller jets.

I think I'll need to schedule a trip to LA in the next months - this really sounds good: can anyone here provide me (resp. us, as I guess that I'll not be the only one needing this) with a map and/or description on how to get to the hill - maybe starting from one of the parking lots between the terminals (so that you don't have to describe dozens of directions)...

SwaFan, you can park over near the Apartments across the northside and walk over. However you ultimately you will be approached by a cop or cops. You may get one of the cool cops (one with bins and a camera of his own) or you may get one of the guys who believes anyone near the fence is a terrorist and demanded to leave. So it's up to you and how much your stomach can take.

Leskova, just look at mapquest.com. Find Imperial Highway (near Center street in El Segundo) and the Imperial Terminal. The Imp terminal is on accessible airport grounds (and there's a newly opened Aviation Museum there)..the hill is 'DIRECTLY' across the street..Stevie Wonder couldn't miss it. It's giagantic and starts right at the edge of the roadway (Imperial Highway). Good luck.

BN747,

Thank you for the advice. Yes, I have been harassed by the police on numerous occasions, even before 9/11.

The bridge leading across from Sepulveda Blvd. to Terminal 1 (not the main airport entrance, but rather the airport entrance just south of the Sepulveda Blvd./Lincoln Blvd. split) is also a great vantage point, although you do get quite a few stares from passing motorists wondering what the heck you're doing there.

I haven't been to LAX for awhile, but I'm not sure where this vantage point is. I used to go up on the hill close to the ocean where the "blue butterfly/El Segundo butterfly" sanctuary was.

Was in a great position to see an Air New Zealand 747-400 barely clear that hill during takeoff. Would be a fabulous place to see those rare onshore landings (i.e. from the ocean toward land).

BN747 - Thanks! Took me a while to find Center Street (thought you might have meant Cedar at first, but then I found it): I'll try it next time I'm in LA!

And I just realized - I must have gone right by it when I was in LA in '99... rats, I thought I had kept my eyes open then... on the other hand, I took dozens of pictures from between Terminal 1 and 2 (US Airways/SWA on one side, AirNZ on the other), which was quite a good place as well for everything going out (or coming in) on the north side of the airport: do they chase you away from that point now, or can you still stand there?

Johnboy

I think you are describing the west end of the runways. The hill is to the south of the airport and gives a great view of 25L and R.

The In-and-Out on Sepulveda, a great place to spot, is on the north side, about as close to the threshold of 24R (747 arrival a plenty) as is legal. Quite a crowd gathers here. Man, the first time I saw a 747 that close overhead, I actually jumped out of the way.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

LAX is awesome

Am I right about these locations?

So is the construction done and the fence around it gone?

There's also an Imperial Hill thread in the Photography discussions with specific directions.

The hills with the Butterfly sanctuary are off limits. They have been fenced off for some time to protect the little buggers.

The only bad thing about Imperial Hill is the wires that get in the way, but they are pretty easy to work around.

There is a corresponding thread over in the photography forum. Several of us have written a note of thanks to the City of El Segundo for providing this park and being spotter friendly.

Johnboy, the hill of which you speak of ia atop 'Sandpiper St. That hill is still accesible by foot. Park on Pershing (airport/city side) or on PCH ( Hwy 1 - Oceanside ) and walk up to the the top of Sandpiper. Vehicular traffic is now off limits and barricaded. This area is good only for viewing departures off the north runways over the ocean..and you are at the very end, high up and far away from the field. But again, at this spot expect a visit from either good cop, bad cop or both!...but you will get a visit!

To the guys who wrote El Segundo officials re: 'the view area' my hats off to you! It is this type of effort that will spread knowledge and help acclimate the masses about out hobby and craft!
