Delta Airlines B777?

I've read several archived posts about Delta's "upcoming" 777 order, but, even though ALPA's Delta chapter seems to have agreed on the 777/764 pay scale, Delta has placed no 777 orders and no further 777s have been delivered. To the best of my knowledge, there are 2 777s in the DL fleet right now: one operates round trip ATL-LGW as DL12/15, and the other operates CVG-LGW as DL36/37 r/t. Sometimes the CVG schedule is apparently op'd by a 763 when that 777 moves to the ATL-MCO market temporarily to fill demand.

Also, a quick check of reserved N-number registrations indicates that N860DA and N861DA are 777s owned by DL since 3/31/99, but N862DA, N863DA, N864DA, and N865DA are still owned by the Boeing Company, having probably been built but still awaiting delivery.

What in the world is the hold-up? Surely I missed something in past posts... Merci beaucoup!

Just wanted to clarify my question: Why has Delta not accepted any more 777s? Will the 777 fleet be delivered eventually with no interruption in DL 777 service? If so, when???? Thanks.

Look for Delta to start taking more 777's this month I believe. There are supposed to be several already completed just not delievered due to the contract talks.

Delta pilots who were on the forum all said that there were numerous rumors about an order for 20-40 777s comming up, but who knows what is keeping them. There are in fact 5 in Seattle and Justplanes.Com reported that 2 or 3 of them shoudl already be in Atlanta and ready to go into service if they aren't already. The MD-11s will be shifted to JFK and the 777s will likely remain on the ATL-MCO rotue for a long time to come.

Thanks for all the info. So Delta will definitely be keeping its growing 777 fleet? I guess the risk that the fleet would be removed from service as a result of the lack of a permanent pilot agreement is now a thing of the past? Thanks again!

One Question?

Why would Delta use such a large aircraft such as the MD-11 or 777 for a short hop like the ATL-MCO Routes?

The demand is high in the southeast for seats and a 767,777, or L-1011 is what is needed in the south. Also MCO is the airport where alot of the training for pilots goes on.

I apologize if I answer any already answered questions, but;

Delta has firm orders for seven 777s, five of which have now been delivered... I have been lucky enough to be near to or on N860DA (fleet #7001), N861DA (fleet #7002) and N865DA (fleet #7006) - they operate according to the schedule on DL12/DL11 ATL-LGW & Return (I have been on this one on a 777), DL36/37 CVG-LGW & Return (and this one) and they are also reported to be flying ATL-FRA-ATL on DL14/27 (don't ask why, but DL15 is the late flight and 27 is the early flight of return of DL14.)

As for the order, Delta has confirmed the 'Rolling Order' for seven of the ten 'Rolling options' brining the total 777 fleet eventually up to 14, at least as it appears it will be.

The MD-11s will not fly domestic routes with the exception of ATL-PDX as a continuation of ATL-PDX-NRT etc. - the 777s will fly ATL/CVG-MCO for 'Crew Training Purposes' on their arrivals from London somedays as I have been on DL1995 to MCO straight after DL11 in from London....... both on the same plane from the same gate. (E31)

Another reason the 777 is on the ATL-MCO route is that those routes are ofter served by L-1011-1 aircraft, being the largest capacity airplane (301 pax) that Delta has - the next being the 777 (277 pax) - meaning that once the L-1011s start to leave (ie now and for the past nine months) for a while the 777s will be needed until the 767-400ERs come in to replace them.

Well I will go with Delta the 767 is way better than the 777 as I said before the 777 is a oversized 767 wannabe.

You say that you "will go with Delta the 767 is way better than the 777..." Is that Delta's official position on the aircraft? Last time I checked, Delta wanted the 777...that's why the pilots have gotten their way and are getting paid $265/hour to fly them. Although I'm no Leo Mullen [sic], it seems to me that the 777 is crucial to Delta's strategic plan for trans-Atlantic route expansion...Delta's current growth trends may or may not be able to support only the 767 family (including the 764) in a few years on trans-Atlantic routes. My question is whether or not Delta will be operating the 777 a year from now...although if BA747-100's implication is correct, maybe not? I'm just wondering what specific data BA747-100 uses to form his/her conclusion???

Don't worry, IFLYDELTAJETS, Delta Air Lines WILL keep their 777s. Just like DLMD11 and DeltaAir said, they will fly beyond 2 Apr 00 and already have taken delivery on 3 of 5 of the stored 777s, according to Boeing. BA 747-100 is just a kid trying to pi** you off; the user profile says age 5-15, so he's a bit immature. He's expressing his own opinions regarding the 767 versus 777. I haven't heard of any other person preferring the 767 over the 777. Looking forward to seeing DL 777 at LAX in the near future?The777Man

There appears to be some confusion about Delta's current order for 13 Boeing 777s.

In announcing a massive order for Boeings in March 1997, Delta placed options on 10 B777s, and decided a few weeks later to power these airplanes with Rolls-Royce engines. However, these were not firm orders.

Delta, however, firmed up these 10 options, and took options on a further 20 airplanes, and rolling options on a further 30 airplanes, in November 1997. This meant that Delta had 10 B777s on order, and 50 on option.

Delta converted options on 2 B777s in March 1998, and another one in December 1998. To date, then, Delta has 13 B777s on order (or in service). The airline has taken delivery of five of these airplanes, and two will follow in January.
