Due to my obsessive love for flying, my friend and I purchased roundtrip tickets on Southwest, from hartford to baltimore, returning Hartford the same day we departed earlier that morning. I must say, (I I normally fly First Class on United) Southwest is a fun and friendly airline. Despite having the gate agents laught at us for our flight to Baltimore "just for the hell of it", we spoke to a very friendly pilot, got pictures of ourselves in the cockpit, and when our parents found out (we are only 16) , got grounded until June. All in all, a lifetime memory my friend and I will never forget, regardless of the consequences.

i've never experienced the service of southwest, but judging from your adventure, it sounds very good.

(I tried to take pictures of the cockpit when i was flying with Cathay Pacificx, but there were too stingy!!)

Sounds Fun, But All SWA's Not That Fun

Now you really need the experience of Flying across the country on Southwest. It's no picnic. 6 hours on a plane isn't fun at all. Cleveland to San Fransisco, but those short flights are fun. Southwest has a laid-back attitude that is unsurpassable by anyone else in the industry.

More On SWA..and The Uniforms

I understand your point. Even on the short hops I flew, I visted BWI's "City Deli" and got a sandwich, as well as other necessities even for an hour flight. I also liked the idea of picking your own seat; I managed to get a great one next to the engine on the left side (For some reason I like the left side better than the right...am I crazy??)and took a couple great pics of the descent into Bradley. For me, I learned that flying is what I love, whether on a United 757 (!!) or SOuthwest 737.

PS> What do you all think of the Southwest's Pilot Uniform> I am not sure what I think of the non-traditional leather jacket look..I like the classy United Uniforms!!

What you did was great! Sounds like something I would have done when I was younger. What was the cost of your trip? In terms of safety, flying that route was probably safer than going on a high school field trip by bus. I take it you left no note as to your adventure before you left. Do you have your private certificate yet? Keep on flying and remember........keep the blue side up.

It's *all* SWA's fault. If SWA hadn't have made those fares so darn affordable, they'd have still been at home in BDL saving their money for some other airline....

Two round trip tickets ended up costing $280, and after food, parking, and gas...total trip cost was something like $350. Ironically, (considerring the fact that we were grounded, we are planning a second trip (That 14 day advanced reduced fare..YEA YEA!!). To answer your question, I do not yet have my private, yet have about 150 hours in a 172 and will receive my private as soon as I am old enough...17. (From there I hope to go to Embry Riddle for that Aeronautical Science degree.

And Just to reiterate for you other guys,(Alien, OPNL)...
Southwest was a great airline considdering that it is lowfare. I could save up for another airline as you suggest, but I don't have to...I fly first class on United every other month

Just razzing SJC about hiz continued Kmart references... Glad you had a nice flight.

If you've got aviation that much in your blood at age 16 that you went on such a field trip, you'll do well in the business.

SW's Facilities At Hartford

I went to BDL the other week to see what it looked like( My home airport is and forever shall be.. PVD) I was suprised to see SW's facilites at hartford. Their 2 gates are crammed in this glass cubicle also used for INTL arrivals and when i saw their ticket counter at 1st i thought it was the gate check in facility!! i though " that can not be the ticket counter!" but it was, shoved in a small back corner and like 20 ft wide. I must say i can not picture the current BDL handling 1 million more or so pax. I think between now and 2003 when their term is done might not be the greatest for air travel from BDL!!
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

The uniforms, in my opinion, at southwest are a joke.   Southwest is an o.k. airline, but just way too laid back. I was on a flight on SW from OAK to BNA...total joke. No nothing from them, just some jokes and a few bags of Dolphins and Friends. The airline is trying to do too many different things, and not changing their in flight service to accomidate those other changes...for example...adding non stop flights from OAK to BNA and using the same service used on a flight from SEA to GEG. It just doesn't work. Also, the mad dash to the gate for who gets on first is just lame.

A great thread. I am flying WN from BDL to RDU via Baltimore tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to flying WN. The planes on all 4 R/T segments are 737-300's. What impresses me is being able to travel on a 14-day advance fare for $158 R/T. The other majors have more restrictions on these fares: 1) The majors require a Sat. nite stayover, but WN requires only one overnite stay, any day; 2) The full walkup 'Y' fare BDL-RDU is only $280; 3) Although the fare is non-refundable, WN won't charge you $75 to change flights, like the others do. So, I look foreward to the flight. I use a wheelchair, and require additional time for boarding. I asked the agents at BDL a few weeks ago if their quick turnarounds (20 min on this plane) posed a problem with my boarding, and they said no...I haven't had a problem with any other airlines, so I'm sure that WN will be fine as well. As for BDL crowding, I agree that the new terminal is needed!
