United Economy Plus

Mon Oct 20, 2003 11:22 pm

I note that there are Economy Plus sections in both United's 744s and 777s. However, when I enquired about flights between HKG and the US, I was told that you can't specifically book these seats. So how do you get to sit there?

thanks

Become a premier, or pay a full y fare.
Or know someone who works for UAL.

Even if you can't book them in advance, get to the airport early enough the day of your flight and ask for one. I can get them about half the time. Even if the check-in agent doesn't give you an Economy Plus seat, ask the gate agent again when you get to the gate. I just came back from a IAD-GRU-IAD trip. I got the Economy Plus seat at the gate for my outbound flight, and from the check-in agent on the way back. Both were aisle seats.

I'm actually a Mileage plus member (ordinary status) but with something like 40,000+ miles. Would that help?

Amount of miles in your MP account won't help. Best bet is, as suggested, ask nicely on your day of travel.

Same here... I have about 47000 miles after my IAD-GRU-IAD trip. In theory, if they don't fill the Economy Plus with all their Premier Members, the rest of the seats go to us "mere mortals". I don't know if they have a way to check that you are "almost there" for Premier status, but be sure to mention it in case they say there are no Economy Plus seats available. Persevere without being obnoxious.

Yeah ask nicely. I was flying on Gov't tickets and got the plus seats everytime-very nice with mucho leg room. The first leg of the trip I didn't ask, I just got them, from there on out I asked- and I loved it.

EcoPlus really is nice, but I was quite a bit annoyed when the 777 that I took from LHR to IAD last year didn't have real EcoPlus seating... it said EcoPlus on the seat-number-sign, but the seat-pitch was standard Eco...

... only later did I find out that some 777s are configured without EcoPlus seating - but at least they left the seat next to mine empty, which was nice, since the flight was almost full...

I also got a plus seat when i asked for it during check in (no status, not full fare either). The extra 2-3 inches really make a huge difference and it was one of my best longhaul flights

From past flights I've taken, in which I've sat in Economy Plus, it seems like the first few rows of economy are considered Economy Plus. So, if you book online like I do, try to get a seat in one of those first few rows of Y class, and that might work out.

I've sat in EcoPlus on a A320 and 757...very nice. I definitely recommend it. I believe the food service is still the same, though.

Food service - and everything else, for that much - is the same... you "only" get more space so that you do not feel like a sardine in a can...  Wink/being sarcastic

You can get those seats by being Star' Gold or Star' silver with any Star' airlines!  Smile I am Silver with both TG and SQ (548 miles to be gold with SQ) so when I fly UA, I get Eco+ even on award ticket from SFO-MIA-GRU!!
Let's just blame it on yields.

Or when you get to the airport to check in...ask for bulkhead seating...that sometimes includes Economy Plus so you get extra extra room. I did that ona flight to Houston after I lost my Premier status....I was bummed when I lost it. But beware in the 744 there is a section all the way in front of economy, in front of the bathrooms that is NOT economy plus. On a flight from NRT to ORD, a flight attendant asked if I would be willing to to switch with a woman with a child so they could put the kid in a seat. I moved to be nice, but realized I went from Economy Plus, to regular Economy even though I was in the first row or Economy. It wasn't horrible, but wasn't as comfortable as I could have been for 12 hours. She offered me extra wine, but whatever. She should have switched her with someone in the back of the plane, NOT me.

Ok as an agent I will tell you the gospel truth about econ plus. Most of what has been said here is mostly true.

1) Econplus is reserved for Premier and higher travellers or full Y, B or M fares. Those are full fare coach and Silver and higher. Silver and higher on US and Star alliance as well.

2) on most of UA's narrowbodies all the exit rows are in econ plus so the exits fall under the same rules.

3) IF the flight is wide open the agent has the DISCRESSION to put someone up there provided that ALL of the folks who are entitled to econplus already have it.

4) The gate agent also has the dissgression to put someone up thier if:

All of the seats are taken on a full flight and thats all thats left. (read middle seat)
They release the preassigned sests at 20 min prior to departure and some seats are available.

5) on light flights the premier sections middle seats are blocked for the comfort of the Premier members and full fare members. Don't be surprised if an agent tells you thier are no econplus left and there are middles still open. Thats the way its supposed to be.

6) ASking doesn't hurt. But if your told econ plus is unavailable you now know why so don't gripe at the agent. It will NOT make an econplus seat come open for you.

7) the major thing agents DO NOT want to happen is a Global services or 1K sitting in the back, when they moved Priceline passengers to econplus. So if you buy priceline or cheap tickets, understand that the agents are just trying to protect those seats for serious bigtime travellers.

UALPHLCS...great explanation. I'm a 1K and I appreciate the recognition by United. I only request upgrades on certain flights, so I appreciate the blocking of the seat next to me in Economy Plus and the extra legroom. Though my recent flights have been very fulll....great for United (unless they're all low fares). Most of the other passengers in Economy Plus are fellow road warriors, so it's nice not to be disturbed as much by those who don't fly regularly. Ten minutes after take off we pull out our laptops and get to work.

UALPHLCS: Again, thanks for the valuable info.!

Two follow-up questions regarding my trip next July to LHR:
1. If I redeem miles between SEA and IAD, can I still get EcoPlus?
2. Does these rules also apply to int'l. flights? I'd like to get EcoPlus on the 777 to LHR and then back again on the 747-400.

Thanks!

I was once in that small section at the front of the 747 economy. It consists of 3 rows of seats that are not econ plus. it was pretty uncomfortable. Right over the wing so you can't see a whole lot. I would definatly avoid it in the future.

Again, great explanation UAL PHLCS! You hit the nail right on the head, and 1Ks like Bicoastal appreciate that logic.

In a way, its like first class, in that it is a premium product that should be reserved for those who qualify for it. Think about it....if you paid for a first class seat (i.e $1200.00), and a dude comes along and sits next to you, and starts telling you how the agent just moved him up into F class because he asked, wouldnt you be a little upset?

Another example....you pay 32,000 for a new Nissan Maxima. The following week, you find out the Nissan dealership is giving away Maximas....or selling them for the price of a basic Sentra....how do you feel?

Thanks again UALPHLCS!

honestly, Stevenuhl777, I have no experience with working UA widebodies. I have to look in the computer to see where Econ plus is on those planes. But the same rules apply for those flights as well as narrowbodies.

There is only one difference: on International flights the time to release preassigned seats is earlier than on a domestic.

I told you to ask a gate agent 20min prior to departure on a domestic flight. I think that time is 30min prior on an international. Someone in here can probably back me up on that.

Bicostal and JC5280 I appriciate your comments. You both seem to understand that we genuinely try to make econplus work the way it's supposed to. As I said above the greatest fear about econplus is moving up a Priceline tkt only to find a 1K in the back. The second greatest fear is a fligth packed with Premier flyers.

I have worked many a friday evening flight w/ a list of 50 Silver, Gold and 1K members. With that many someone HAS to sit outside of econplus. Those folks seem to hold it against UA that they are on a VERY popular buisness flight. But that just can't be helped.

A little less Hooah, and a little more Dooah.

UALPHLCS,
You have been gone for awhile? Good to see you back.

Very good at explaining the econplus theory. I have given out many middle seats in the rear to keep seats in the econ plus section open for people like BICOSTAL, trying to make the UAL experience a good one.

The *ONLY* 777's with Economy Plus is..........

seating config.
12 first *** no eplus seats *****
49 business
215 coach

10 first
49 business **** no eplus seats *****
216 coach

12 first
49 business *** has eplus seats, rows 17-26 ******
197 coach

36 first ***** has eplus seats, rows 16-26 ****
312 coach

If you are off to LHR then you wont have the 2 class 777, that is a Hawaii bound 777.

777contrail,

I keep my posts to a minimum now after this site allowed that a$$ to post his "opinion" and my opinion about it was deemed " flamebait.

My point on that was never acknowleged so I don't participate like I used to. I just don't give a sh!t about airliners.net anymore.

I come in now and again I add my 2 cents in worthy posts and leave the mountains of crap to those who enjoy wallowing in it.

I don;t know how you can stand it any more, They call you the UA information minister. Like your Bagdad Bob saying the US is getting trounsed with GI standing behind you. When in reality its the Shrill crys that UA is going bust any minute that have been wrong for almost a year now.

I'll pole my head in every now and again. See ya Contrail

I don't know about the rules, but here is my experience:
The last three flights with UA domestic I've been upgraded to Eco Plus, even if I had the cheapest available tickets and I was not a silver or gold star member at the time. To of the flights we were upgraded at check in, and the last time at the gate. We even got the emergency row seats in the 320, with lots of leg-room.
I don't know the reason, but I noticed that when I booked the flight it was full in regular economy, so I could not select seat. The flight itself wasn't very full, several free seats in the back of the plane.

Just dress nice and smile, that is what I've done, and really show that you are happy with the upgrade.

And as for the 767-200's used on the ny-la, etc., seems to me they don't have it. In fact, the agent kept calling it the "Premier zone", which made me chuckle. So what's the difference? I sat there going one way (opted for my own row in the back for the other), but forgot to take note of any differences. Pretty sure the seat pitch was the same though. Maybe there's ports for computers?

I know what you mean, good to hear from you anyways.
I know the name they call me, and the one who is childish to keep it going has no respected users so I don't mind.
even though there are so many non aviation and non airline personnel here it is purely entertainment, and rocking the boat is fun with this crowd.
I go in spurts, and this does get lame, I get warned a lot because of over sensitive people and others as well don't get deleted.

Hope to hear from you soon and by the way United is going under Nov. 15th so set your watches. Big grin

I just did a r/t AMS-LAS on a 50,000 mile saver-award. DO NOT make the same mistake I did.
I selected the (economy)seats which were shown as being available when reserving on UAL.com.
And that is ALL I got. Note: I'm NOT complaining, $41 to go r/t AMS-LAS, what more do you want Big grin

However, if you do NOT select seats while booking your flights online, you may get those 2 or 3 inches extra pitch when you check in.
