Ahhhh...

They have a on/again.... off/again schedule with NWA.... Once described to me as " once the pitcher is filled, change it to another ",i.e. once KLM make a profit... NWA then gets a pice of the action... once KLM makes a profit... NWA then gets a piece of the action... It is a very odd agreement I must admit... the same situation for MSP!

All AMS revenues are shared between nwa/klm--doesnt matter who flies route..

I wish there was a KLM aircraft operating to DTW. Flew the 743 last Christmas while trying to avoid the red tails. Unfortunately KL has no plans to serve DTW this winter, but on the other hand, NW's A330's are great alternatives. Especially since NW's in-flight service has been dramatically improving each time I fly them.

but the service is different, as are equipement. Some might fancy KL, some might fancy NW.
-UN
(I think NW finds a codeshare unlucrative since they are feeding a hub, and want NW flight numbers... KL would have to depend on O&D since NW would only sell a certain number of seats under their paper)
What now?

KLM will probably return by the summer. They were out for a while after 9-11, but returned in the summer of 2002 until recently.

I remember the days at DTW when you would see two KLM aircraft a day.

I remember those days also, remember the F gates with the 747's right up close and personal. The 2 KLM planes mixed in a sea of red tails.

NW's scheduled to operate all three flights ex-DTW this winter and one more beginning in the spring. However, the latter's schedule won't be finalized for awhile... NW "traded" EWR-AMS and IAD-AMS for the fourth DTW frequency + MEM-AMS ... if KL were to return, I'd expect NW to "trade" for one of KL's routes.

The occasional and rare MD-11 flight into DTW was always my favorite.

LAX-AMS, SFO-AMS have always been KLM

JFK-AMS has been operated by NW in the past. One of the flights was a NW 744, mainly for the reason since the aircraft from NRT-JFK would've otherwise sat at JFK for something like 20 hours.

It wasnt that rare- from 1995-96, KLM was flying the MD-11 to DTW in addition to the 747.

Then for the most part in 2002, KLM was flying the MD-11 with an occassional 743. I was lucky enough to see the KLM Asia 744 come to DTW as a sub one day last year when there was a technical problem with the MD-11 so we saw two KLMs parked at the Midfield that day.

NW is currently scheduled to operate all four flights to AMS next summer -- but that really doesn't mean anything, since they swap routes with week's notice.

But most flight from the US to Ams are done with NW aircraft.
It's about even:
JFK - 1x to 2xKLM
EWR - KLM
IAD - KLM
BOS - NW
DTW - 3xNW
MEM - NW
MSP - 2xNW
IAH - KLM
SEA - NW
SFO - KLM
LAX - KLM

KLM = 6 to 7 daily flights
NW = 8 daily flights

Isn't MIA also operated by KLM now?

I forgot about MIA -- early morning memory blunder...

So KL's 7 to 8, NW's 8. Pretty even... and if our favorite Dutch carrier didn't eliminate MCO/ATL/PHL-AMS ....

When did NWA start the MEM-AMS service? I remember early this year i was flying the PHX-MEM route and saw the KLM 767-300 PH-BZE (i think). I sure miss the KLM`s in MEM.

IndustrialPate, AMS-PHL was a NWA DC-10, but as far as AMS-ATL is concerned. You never know what Skyteam will bring to ATL (forget about MCO as Martinair is already flying to MCO)

KLM stopped flying to MEM mid summer season (wasn't it August?) if I'm correct
